Morning all!
Well, I was sure that last week would be the beginning of the spring egg explosion in our coops: warm weather, moon waxing full, daylight inched over 11 hours, and . . . nothing. Well, not nothing - - a couple of eggs a day (on a good day), but no measurable changes at all.
Today, however, is a different story - - we had four eggs before the girls even came out for breakfast, and it looks like more are in the works. Even my youngest hens (bantam cochins!) are getting into the swing of things. . . and old Dame Edna the Black Australorp has even made her first deposit of the year. Not bad for a 5+ year old hen!
Spring's coming!
[Ed. to add - - Ameraucana eggs (large blue/green), Black Australorp egg (big brown), bantam Ameraucana eggs (small blue), bantam cochin eggs (small cream), silkie eggs (medium rose beige)]
believer01, I'm sending lots of healing thoughts your way. Our birds are never as healthy and happy as when they have their "chicken parent" watching over things! Hope you are dancing around soon!
1newegg, good luck with your NPIP. HBuehler is also certified, and she may have some useful info too.
Holly, I'm sure your birds will settle in soon. They hate change, don't they? A nice bunch of grapes might help them not think about it too much.
I had hoped to breed BBS bantam cochins, but I think I am looking for a little different "type" than most of what I have. I want some that look like my Penny, and she has a very unique, rounded face and heavier eyelids. . . almost like she has some bantam Cornish. I just love her overall look, so anyhoo . . . I may let all five of my other blue/black bantam cochins go - - the two roos and three young hens. One roo and hen are PQ (the sweetest ones, of course), the remaining three are better quality, but all are adorable and hand raised. I may try to rehome all five together. . .
Well, hope you all have a great day with your birds!
