The Middle Tennessee Thread

My one pullet is laying, the rest aren't yet. When should I change them to layer feed? When I change them what should I feed the ROO? I've been told he shouldn't get the extra calcium, but how do you keep them from eating it? I'm almost out of my grower feed so now would be a good time to switch to layer, or should I just make oyster shell available? :p

My roosters always eat what ever the hens are eating, whether it be layer or what ever.. never saw any negagtive effects..

Just depends on the guineas.. Some will selltle right in after a few days, others will roam forever...

Havent read all 600 plus pages but any meets anywhere for bycers.... Im 45 minutes nw if chattanooga so i could hit m boro or c ville either one.. or have i already missed the fall go around...

I don't think in over a year we have really had a REAL meetup. Some of us will got to things and meet others there, like a show or the fair. I don't keep up with shows much

You may also want to follow the East Tn thread too. There might be some people closer to you. We have BYCers from Sparta and Carthage on here.... That maybe as far east as this group goes.

I've always been told not to give them oyster shell if they are on layer feed....too much calcium. And I only have one rooster but he gets the same the pullets do, although since they free range they don't eat much of the layer feed.

I would switch them. The roo will be fine. My roos eat the same feed as the hens. Unless I have them in pens without hens... they get pullet grower with no calcium.

Thanks folks, I'll change them over when this bag is gone. On a slightly different note my pullet laid her very first large sized egg yesterday ,it was egg #7. I'm still waiting on the rest to start laying.

I got my first egg yesterday from a White Leghorn..... so need to move those pullets. Maybe tomorrow I can get some of that done.

I think 1 or 2 marans are laying to but I just don't know.

Looking to sell one or both of these clowns if anyone is interested! Picture taken two weekends ago. These boys are about three months old, and at least one is crowing. Super gentle, handled daily up until a couple weeks ago at which point they were lap chickens. Getting prettier by the day!

$7 each or possible trade for BCM pullet 6-10 weeks old.

I'm 15 minutes from Murfreesboro. Heading to NW Nashville on Wednesday and could meet someone between here and there on the way in the morning. PM me if interested.

TinTN..... Your Marans pullet is looking pretty good to me.... I should have kept her. Nice copper in her neck. Dose she have copper on her breast at all? She was mossy right? and clean legs? Hum... might have to keep some of those mossy girls. I see hope in this years Marans.

Now if I can find enough pullets at my place with copper necks, I will be in business. Now if I just know what roo was the sire

Donna - the Blue Marans that I hatched from you is looking great and big too. I'll have to take a picture and post it. Feathered legs and very dark blue. Also, pretty sure the SLW that hatched has started laying...at 18 weeks! Crazy. The eggs are definitely on the small size so it's a new layer. I only have two other hens/pullets that are laying and they lay a large to extra large egg. I went out a few days ago and found the smaller egg and was shocked. Now it's been 3 eggs in 4 days.
