The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hi all.
Introducing myself - I'm Jessica and I am in Hendersonville. I have been an on-again, off-again lurker on here for about 7-8 months. Got my first batch of chicks about 6 months ago (a rare breed assortment from McMurray). Ended up with all kinds of birds and learned a lot. Culled a bunch of roosters (more to go), lost a few to predators, etc. They are all free ranging and come into the coop at night.
I just culled my 2 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes roos and a Brahma rooster today. I couldn't stand the 5:15-6:00 crowing competition every morning. I still have a bunch of fun birds left:
1 white cochin rooster
2 white langshan roosters and one hen
1 silver penciled rock (he is so pretty I couldn't get myself to kill him this morning)
1 Sumatra rooster and 2 hens
2 White Laced Red Cornish hens
1 Dominique hen (I think)

They are about 6 months old and only ONE is laying, and she has a new hiding spot that we can't find. But still, entertaining. I wanted to join in this thread so I could start to get to know what is available locally and perhaps join in feed orders and things like that. I am thinking about ordering a batch of Freedom Rangers in early spring (first time with a broiler flock) and also considering a true laying flock since my birds from McMurray aren't productive. Has anyone started a layer flock about this time/November before and have any advice for me? I'd love to have early spring layers.
Jessica
This is a first on the Feed Order. I am getting 2000lbs of feed and anyone can order something. Just let me know what you need. I live in East Nashville and go to Rivergate and Sams all the time or you could come pick up what you order in East Nashville.... what ever we can work out.

Welcome Jessica! I'm kind of new here too, only about 6 months and I have learned so much from the "experts" here on the forum. They really know their stuff and have helped me with so many questions that I had. You will enjoy participating!!

Well I think 2 of the 3 Black Orps Pullets are turning into roos, one hurt its leg and was having trouble walking. I doctored it like I would splayed legs, but not sure that will help..... Three pullets down to 1

..... need more pullets....

Hey all, just figured I'd ask around here as well.. I'm looking for hatching eggs, interested in LF Cochins of BBS, or LF English type Orpingtons (they can have American in the bloodlines as well just want large) BBS. I've been on the auction, and I can't justify the price they want PLUS shipping... only because shipping them from across the US I think I would have poor hatching...

Sorry - I don't have hatching eggs from any of the breeds you listed. I just have Swedish Flower Hens and Cream Legbars. However, I'll bet someone in our group will have what you're looking for.

We need a list of who has what breeds. I wonder if there is a way to attach that to the first post of this thread.
I agree!!! the only thing I can think of to attach it to the first post is to go back and edit the first post and list names with the breeds they have...ex. ....

Lots A Cluckin
Self blue (lavender) and Self blue/Mottled Split Cochin bantams

CityGirlInTheCountry.... Have you caught the bobcat yet??? If not a little advice... Build a box to hide the bait, that way the cat can only see it from the entrance.. And also please never relocate there are plenty of bobcats in the state of tennessee and the rest of the US.. My game warden told me when you relocate a livestock worrier you are just moving your problem to someone elses house.. Even if it is not the same cat, is can and often will cause territorial disputs and displacements among the bobcats of the area you or the rehab organization relocated it to thus causeing a chain reaction that causes someone elso to be in the same predicament that you are in...

Jehu Layne, we have not caught it yet. I have had multiple sightings on the game cam, it is possible that I surprised it at the coops the other night (whatever it was in the bushes certainly scared the snot out of me!), the trap was tripped this morning and the loose bait stolen, but still no bobcat. If I catch it on the weekend it will get shot. If I catch it on a weekday Walden's Puddle will come get it and deal with it for me. I don't really care what they do with it. I believe it is illegal to relocate such things, so hopefully they would give it to a zoo or preserve. Truthfully, since it is injured I don't think it could ever be re-released.

I have been told to just leave the trap alone and don't touch it. I need to reload it with bait tonight, but other than that I stay away from it so it doesn't smell like human. It is nestled up against the trees and brush. Eventually the cat will get hungry enough to go in. I can only hope anyway. I am really tired of it being in my yard now. It kind of freaks me out!

Thanks for the help! If the live bait doesn't work soon we will build a box.

Okay, breeders. I think I am the only one that can edit the first post, but I am happy to do it. Post the breeds you sell and whether you sell eggs, chicks or started birds. I'll add it all to the first post so it is in an easily accessible place. I'll try to do it on Sunday, so post away!
