Good Grief, Charlie Brown - turn off the faucets!

So thankful everyone is safe. Jenski I sure hope that funnel was moving away from you - did it really sound like a freight train?

Troyer, sounds like you've got one smart young'un there!

CityGirl I can just see you talking with the patrolman...."Uh, officer, I need to get home to my chickens"! Think he'd of let you go?

Bout an hour before we got slammed with those straight line winds and rain our dogs started acting funny. Lucy is scared of storms anyway, but usually hides in her safe dog house under the porch. Yesterday she was practically in my pocket and stayed with me every move/turn I made. Next time she acts like that I'll figure we gots some bad stuff on the way.

Hoping to have our drainage problems solved soon! Yesterdays rain put about 3" in the front of the chicken pen, enough to float dishes and straw away. They like to hang out under the coop during rain, but it gets wet enough to chase them inside. Talked with the bulldozer guy about having another swale dug out in the horse pasture to divert the water - he'll come soon's it dries up enough!

I'm also thinking about putting an awning over the pop door on the coop to help keep the blowing rain out. Maybe a lil' table with an umbrella on the patio?

Sigh. I am doomed, just doomed I tell you, to never hatch out a splash hen. Little Screamy is a splash. Little Screamy looks like it will be a gorgeous light splash when all the growing is done. Guess what Little Screamy did this morning. Go on, guess. I swear the little snot stood up on his tippy toes and tried to crow at me. It was pitiful and very strangled, but I swear he is trying to crow at less than a week old. !!*^!%*@#$&)!(_&~~!!! I had such hopes. I really thought that maybe this time the splash fairy would smile on me and I'd get the prettiest little splash hen ever. I think not. Of all the bazillion ameraucanas I have hatched and the half a billion splash ameraucanas I have hatched out, I have hatched exactly ZERO hens. A bazillion pretty little splash roos. Is it something in the water around here? Will the splash fairy never smile on me? Arg.

Now I have a few more of those bad boy bantam Ameraucana Roos looking for a new home...these are the silent type still in black and a beautiful deep blue would make some beautiful EE chicks..Sam has some adorable silkie and cochin crosses nothing like a mohawk and a beard to make you smile

I just don't need more than Sam to handle things..he could run the entire place just fine
Sun is out and it's so warm now I'm done feeding...thanks sun for taking your own sweet time this morning.

Awwww... aren't you sweet to offer! Sadly I don't have a good quarantine pen and because of the NPIP I can't import anything in. And really it now is a personal vendetta to hatch one out from my own flock. There is no reason why I can't hatch out a splash hen.

Thanks though. You are AWESOME for offering up a hen!

Okay Holly - tell me true......when you mentioned a bad boy Amer. roo "who is the silent type' you really got my attention! When you say silent type, do you mean that he doesn't crow? Doesn't crow alot? Doesn't crow unnecessarily?

What I'm getting at is this.....I wonder if my girls need a roo to watch for hawks, but the coop is too close to the house and I am far too sensitive to sounds.......I'm afraid a regular roo would drive me nuts crowing so close. If I could find a fella who'd play watchdog and coo at my girls without lotsa loud stuff I might try to enlarge my coop and provide a home for him.

What say you? I know, I know, I only want the sun, the moon and the stars all wrapped up neatly, eh?

Believer- my coop is less than 50' from the house. It is probably more like 25' from my dining room windows which are 14' from my bedroom. I have two ameraucana roosters, 1 EE rooster and about 7 silkie roosters out there. I honestly do not hear them any more unless I am already awake and paying attention. If for some reason I am up in the wee hours I can hear them crowing (about 3am-ish), but if I am tucked into bed asleep I don't hear any of it. And I tend to be a really light sleeper. The windows are single pane and the house has little insulation. And still it doesn't bother me.

I think you just sort of get used to the sound as being "normal" and it doesn't register in your head. I love having roosters with my flock. I love their big personalities and their good care of their women. They are silly, goofy and funny walking bundles of testosterone. I LOVE having them out there and am always sad when I have to move on the young cockerels. They are so much more fun than the girls.

All in all, I find that my ameraucana roosters are generally quieter. Their crow is a little deeper than the silkie crows and they don't seem to do it as much. They are also really good at watching out for danger. I have had a variety of roosters and these guys are the most mellow I have ever had. I would totally recommend the ameraucana roosters. I don't know much about the bantam AMs, but Holly always has nice birds. She could pick you out a good one.

Annie, that sounds so good! Thanks for adding to the info. According to a friend who's a 'special needs teacher' I have sensory issues - in other words I'm way more aware of sounds that most folks. There's a couple roo's half a mile from here that I hear throughout the day when the windows are open. But I can't get a guard dog for the birds, so I might need to put up with the crowing for their protection.

Decisions, decisions!
