The Middle Tennessee Thread

Welcome to BYC ...I wouldn't think Rocks would be too hard find. I know we have a couple chicken enablers here somewhere.

Ya think?!

My mom has some barred Rocks she bought from a guy who advertises heavily on CL that he has pure bred chicks, very cheap. Nice temperament but obvious mixes and one of 4 has a severe wry tail (she needs frequent attention to her backside or she builds up a manure ball). I wouldn't get Rocks there (although his Brahmas are pretty!)

Hello, I'm new to the site and soon to be new to chickens. I'm in the East Tennessee area and occasionally travel to Middle Tennessee. We are in the process of getting a coop and would like to get some chicks in the very near future. I was hoping to find someone in Middle or East Tennessee that could supply our birds. We leaning towards getting Rocks. Anyone out there have some good local suggestions for Rocks. Thanks. Don

I have Barred Rocks, Blue Barred and Reg Barred. My roo is a Good Shepard Barred Rock so the chicks will have that nice tight straight barring. These are NOT hatchery Barred Rocks. There is someone in East TN that has Blue barred rocks too.... I don't know his name, I saw a post with pictures on the Barred Rock Thread. If you are just looking for pullets you might could find chicks at ta feed store. I would think some feed stores would have sexed barred rock pullets for sale soon.

Oh, I bet they're pretty! Do you have pictures of the blue barred?

We are going to Newnan. Not taking anything for sale but we are taking a White Silkie pullet to show. Going to look for some Lavender Silkies while we are there!
I wanted to take my Barnies but I'm just gonna check things out instead, gonna sit back and take notes

and ask lots of annoying questions. Hope to see you guys there maybe we can exchange cell numbers and meet up.

Can't go to Newnan, but ya'll should have fun. My dosen't even like birds DH secretly had fun at the Dalton show, so I'm sure it will be great :)

Meanwhile, closer to home
Ticks already :(

Worked outside yesterday on repairs to grow out pen fence & 30ft row of potatoes planted,
keep waking up all night - found 4 ticks crawling on myself , yucky.
Only silver lining is this means we NEED more free range birds.

I see ya hiding in the shadows Butch i'm gonna hatch, hatch, hatch when I get done these other cuckoo gals can go. They have layed some nice big eggs and still good color I feel for being so late in the season. Cuckoo's in the back row

Yes ticks and moles already I have ( well I should say I had ) a big fat mole that was just cuttin the rug across my back yard. I got him yesterday if anyone has mole problems I have found some awesome traps that work.

I will be building a new bator, a double turner side by side unit. This will give my fumble fingers easy access from above rather then trying to reach back deep in between the trays. Should hold a more even temp than stacked trays. I will still be able to set 82 eggs and start doing staggered hatches with a separate hatcher. If anyone is interested in the build I'll take notes I could also build them to order, naturally I will need to do some test runs first but the mad scientist side of me seems to think it'll work. Also this will be kept in doors most of the time and will look like a piece of furniture when completed. I plan to do all my assembly with pocket holes and wood glue. I'll take plenty of picks as I go wish me luck.
