Sounds like pasty butt to me too. A few of my chicks had it as well. Just wipe it off and keep on eye on him/her. If it doesn't come off easily I've placed the bottom of the chick in a bowl of warm water and gently loosen it up. Not pleasant but it works. Just make sure you really dry the chick off and keep her warm. Don't know what causes it but there are quite few threads on it.

Good luck!!

I couldn't quote everyone who helped on this topic but THANK YOU ALL

! It is the 2 smallest that are having the pastie issue however they are thriving, have been under the lamp continually, & we are keeping a very close eye on them, not to mention their in our living room under the lamp so their hard to miss anyway lol. This morning we cleaned the two bottoms off & they handled it great not that they had too much of a choice, we quickly got them dry & right back under the lamp. Thank you again everyone! I just love this forum more & more each day!!!

Oh no, Jen! I didn't realize there were nekkid chicken sites........guess I better not get the girls that iPad after all!

Have you ever just entered "showgirls" in your search browser? I did not thinking and well you can guess what popped up. I would hate for my little one's to run across that while surfing the web. For future refrences I will put in "showgirl chickens". But that also gave me an idea on marketing "Ask me about my Showgirls" will look great on my bumper stickers and window stickers. And very likely to get more traffic on my website. I sold all my babies. I will make another cull in a couple of weeks from this same batch if anyone is interested.

Oh and Holy I don't eat eggs. Haven't in years! The silkies get all unfertile and extra eggs which they love. I wish I had pens for other breeds but I just keep filling them up.

On the pasyt bottoms you may want to add some probios to the food. You can get it at TSC for 10 bucks.

Hope all are well and enjoying this weather. WOW! I just hate all the yard work. Spraying the ditches today cause I can't get the weed eater to start again. I need an electric switch one.

My mother reports watching her mother use a toothpick to carefully remove the pasty butt poop. Grandma then applied a smear of Vaseline to the vent area. It made later clean ups easier. Mom also remembers Grandma getting really angry at herself if any of the chicks in her care died. This would have been in the 1950s to 1960s.

Keep those little tails clean!

by the way i had my chicks before the coop also LOL

For what it is worth, I have more pasty butt issues with silkies than with my EEs and AMs. I finally started trimming the fuzz off their tushies at the very beginning before the pasting sets in. That and a little olive oil basting seems to keep it at bay.

I am galvanting around New York City this week having a blast! Saw a Broadway show last night that I really wanted to see. It was sold out until May, so I wasn't really all that hopeful about getting in. I decided to go down and wait in the cancellation line just in case. A lovely group of three people came by with an extra ticket so I got to see this AMAZING play for $17 (all the cash in my wallet!). The guy that sold it to me even offered to give some back at the end of the night when he realized that I would be trekking home with zero cash. How nice was that?! I thought of y'all during the show. There was a goose puppet that kept showing up that was great. (I know, puppets sound cheesy, but these were so believeable that you forgot they were puppets.) The play is called War Horse if you get a chance to see it on tour. It was amazing. I am so pumped that I got to see it.

The rest of New York has been delightful. Technically I am here working, but I have had the last three days free. Ellis Island, Stature of Liberty, MoMA, WTC Memorial, Lincoln Center. Today is the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum and a dance show. Who knows what I'll find to do tomorrow!

I'm not sure when the next meet up is happening. When do you all want to meet up?

How about May the 14th- Saturday. No particular reason to choose that day except it is preceded by a payday and working with 2 paychecks a month really sucks. I will have some teenager silkies to find homes for and maybe some BBS Ameraucana or Welsummers.

I also have an oops goose. He is a Sebastopol but is overly little. He would be considered only a pet. Please don't eat him. His name is "Cricket" and he loves to be carried around by my kids.

A meet-up sounds great but May 14th is out for me the 15th would be fine
