The Middle Tennessee Thread

I saw there are some folks from the Nashville area. My family and I are moving to TN in a few weeks and we're trying to figure out what towns allow backyard chickens. I'm having trouble finding information about Springfield and White House. That's the area I think we might end up. We have friends in Smyrna but I know backyard chickens are a no no there so we took that town off of our list of possibilities. It's important to us that we reside somewhat near Nashville (like anywhere within an hour in any direction) simply because we are trying to be no more than 8 hours from the Detroit area so we can easily visit family. Also important is that we live in a town that allows backyard chickens. Anybody from around the Nashville area? If so, what town and do you know the ordinances regarding chickens in your town? I've already checked the city ordinances listed on backyardchickens.com but not many of the towns around Nashville are listed and it's difficult to find the information online. Thanks so much for any help!

I live in the rurals of Wilson county and darned near anything goes here. Plenty of farms around with animals of all types. There are neighborhoods with homeowner associations and regulations of their own and that stuff isn't going to pop up in online searches but I'd think that a realtor ought to be able to chase that info down for you.

Hi! Welcome. I am in Bethpage, about 40 miles NE of Nashville and in the country. Lots of farms and chickens are allowed! Just down the road in Gallatin they aren't allowed in town but are in the outskirts. Off the beaten path but we love it here. We're not far from Portland/Whitehouse area as well.

They are allowed in Nashville.... just hens no roos. Cheatham Co allows them in most areas but maybe different in city limits..... but I have seen chickens and guinea in Ashland City City Limits too.

Come to think of it, I have a friend in Nashville (or very near) that has a farm. I'll try to get in touch with her and find out exactly where and what they're allowed to have.

Nashville just passed the law last year. If you are in city limits you can have up to 6 hens.... number of hens is based on the lot size. If you buy property that is zoned agricultural you can have what every you want. Our farm is in Nashville but is agricultural so I have LOTS of chickens and guinea.... neighbors have goats, donkeys, chickens, guinea and are thinking of getting cows all in Nashville.

That is not accurate. Nashville didn't even allow chickens when that was posted. The new law was effective mid year of 2012. I does have a sunset clause so Nashville will have to fight to keep the right to have chickens.

Thanks for the new info! I'm new to all this; it's good to know when something isn't right, so as not to follow incorrect advice.
