The Middle Tennessee Thread

I am re thinking my idea to have roosters. If anybody is interested let me know.
1. Silkie roo, he started crowing about 6 weeks ago. Really sweet, we have given him baths and all around been a pet, the kids tote him around al over. He's pictured in my profile but I can send more.

2. Salmon Faverolle that just came from cackle, about 10 days old

3. Easter Egger, also came from cackle, about 10 days old.

Both babies have has marecks vaccine. I just want them to get homes where they won't be food. If you want one let me know. I'm down In Savannah.

I saw there are some folks from the Nashville area. My family and I are moving to TN in a few weeks and we're trying to figure out what towns allow backyard chickens. I'm having trouble finding information about Springfield and White House. That's the area I think we might end up. We have friends in Smyrna but I know backyard chickens are a no no there so we took that town off of our list of possibilities. It's important to us that we reside somewhat near Nashville (like anywhere within an hour in any direction) simply because we are trying to be no more than 8 hours from the Detroit area so we can easily visit family. Also important is that we live in a town that allows backyard chickens. Anybody from around the Nashville area? If so, what town and do you know the ordinances regarding chickens in your town? I've already checked the city ordinances listed on backyardchickens.com but not many of the towns around Nashville are listed and it's difficult to find the information online. Thanks so much for any help!
We are technically in Franklin, just south of Nashville, kind of like a suburb, but not in city limits as such, we are in "Williamson county" and they are allowed here....even roosters.

My DH just found my purebreed Black Ameraucana Rooster "BlueJeanBoy" dead in the pen,
but he took 5 baby copperheads out with him.

I believe my doesn't like poultry DH has a little more respect for the birds today,
those baby copperheads were right beside our garden and it could have been me rather than the Rooster...
along w/ the bad news DH _very carefully_ handed me the eggs from the pullet in that pen
*so I could set them in the bator right away*
yep, BlueJeanBoy has done his breed and chickens generally proud today, RIP.

I live in Rutherford County and you can have them here. I don't know about inside Murfreesboro proper, but out in the boondocks where I live nobody seems to care. :)

Awww... that's sad. :( Good boy BlueJeanBoy!

Check the county ordinances. A lot of the land here on hillsides is graded as fragile and erosion prone. On these properties both in the cities and outside you can't have chickens because they scratch the ground. You can have any other kind of bird even ostriches and emus but not chickens. I am going to talk to my city hall (Millersville just about 10 minutes from Whitehouse) because I have 1/2 acre that is flat and not this fragile type of ground. I am going to try to get them to recognize that my whole property is not the fragile ground and let me use this half acre for chickens. White house is up on the ridgetop plateau. I know of at least one person (don't know if they are a BYCer) who raises chickens up there. A lot of cities here have borders that expand out over farms. Other places in Millersville allow for chickens as long as you are not on the slopes of hills. Of course other than the flood plain of Slater's Creek and it's tributary creeks most of the rest is hill. Whitehouse if much more flat though it is higher in elevation. It is all about slope around here. If you get a topographical map you can probably figure most of it out with that. Just double check if some land is of mixed hill and flat how the county/city views it.

For that he deserves a proper grave with a headstone.

Also check with the County Extension Agent. They have a map of where this fragile zones are. Some places are rural enough that you won't be bothered as long as you manage you land well and don't overstock and damage the land, but inside city limits they like to collect fees for the city coffers. Here is their phone #:(615) 452-1423
