So of my gals did the same thing -- layed UNDER the perfectly lovely nestboxes I had for them.
Some even pulled staw _out_ of the next boxes to nest underneath on the clean straw I had right there in the boxes!

I finally realized the diff. was UNDER was DARKER, so I rigged up some burlap to hang just over the top 1/3 of the boxes
like I little privacy light blocking curtain, the girls took a day or two to get up the nerve to peek under the burlap, but then
they were all about the next boxes for laying after that.

In fact I just cleaned & put fresh straw in those boxes today, and made sure the burlap was hanging just so after,
I've got 2 pullets in there now who's clutchmate gave an egg yesterday :) so I wanted to make sure everything was perfect for the new layer gals.

You may have just hit it on the head.....unfortunately when we had the coop built it had 6 really nice nesting boxes but none of them have anything on top, they are completely open......I'll have to see what I can do. Thanks!

We got our first blue egg yesterday..... Hubby was in and out fixing their watering system, and when he went in there it was!!! I was jealous that he found it..lol

congrats...my easter egger when she first started laying she laid every day for about 10 days then her production dropped to about 4 per week which is still good

Good news! I am back in the chicken business! Well sorta,I got seven free roosters today!lol. But after being without birds for a couple of months its nice to have some even if they are roosters!. They just game mixes about leghorn size and young. I figure they will make some tradeing material or I can take them to the sale and switch them for some hens. Anyway its nice to have feathered friends again!
