wow that is great! yep silkies are more work that your average chicken...but I dont plan on having them much longer as I m selling all of my birds except my trio of Black English Orpingtons and I am going to start breeding them in the spring and start adding new colors I am first going to add some nice BBS chicks this spring and hope to add several other colors (chocolate, buff, white, lavender..and more!)

Hey everyone....sorry to say Sophie didn't make it. I had a feeling, she kept getting worse and worse and stopped eating yesterday afternoon. Dr Hatcher has ideas of what it was but it could have been many things. She said she could send her off and the state does free autopsies if I want, and I did, so I should know soon enough. We talked over everything from gout to a lesser form of Mareks. Sophie had been vaccinated against it but she said that's like parvo for a dog, no guarantee. She also told me not to worry about the rest of my flock, they probably won't ever get it if it was. Sometimes even vaccinated they can still carry the gene in their bodies that you never know until an illness....then it could trigger it or cause something totally different......but she's also not sure that's what it was.  I'll let you know what the state finds.

BTW.....she is an excellent doctor with very reasonable rates. Thanks to "Bit by Chicken Bug" for the recommendation.....It was a little of a drive for me but I'm glad I found her......if anyone wants the info, Dr. Jennifer Hatcher.... located off 840 on Arno Road, easy access. 6545 Arno Road College Grove.....368-7873

Cinny I'm so glad dr hatcher worked out for you and sorry the hen didn't make it. been there. I had a silimar incedence with a silkie hen I had.. I LOVED that chicken and just became enamoured with their gentle, kid friendly disposition. When she died after a week of hand feeding, meds, etc, I was super sad. Funny the silkie topic comes up....

So about three weeks later I found a gal with some porcelin silkie chicks (the other girl was a porcelin as well) and went and got two, and made arrangements to get two paints from Judy Lee, (who is who recommended dr hatcher to me), and began my hunt for some cuckoos. I even bought them their own separate tractor. Then two mornings ago I go out to the shed and one of the porcelains is dead. Totally healthy, then gone.

I've decided that silkies are perhaps too delicate of a breed for me. I've thought a lot about it and as much as I love them, it seems they have extra needs that might be over the top for my farm. So now I'm looking to place this lone silkie. Not sure the exact age but its around two months old and is gorgeous. If anyone can give it a good home, pm me.

Oh Gosh...if anything happened to my Silkie there would be one very very sad little boy here....he loves that chicken. They are a different breed for sure. I think ours is about 6-8 months old. She is so sweet and loving and laying too! Think she's gone broody though sits on her "area" for hours and really gives me a hard time when I take her egg. She refuses the roost no matter how many times I stay out there and put her on it at night....won't use the nesting boxes either. She's found herself a space under the nesting boxes and sleeps and lays there, there is no changing her mind. We have a buff orpington who is decidedly the largest chicken in our little flock and the Silkie will peck and her and run her all over the pen but to us she's the sweetest thing ever!

Hi guys!I live in Arrington right Nexted to cool springs in Franklin.i have one question.Does anybody get there chicks from the poultry house in Arrington?Or do you guys buy any from local farms in middle TN?I just looking for local hatcheries in Arrington,Brentwood,Franklin,and places near there.thanks!

I have. Thumbs up on Poultry House -- my chicks from them grew into healthy, productive hens (and the EEs are a terrific variety of colors!).

Oh, and I have a couple of really nice Marans that I got from Raven here although she's not exactly close to you. There are lots of folks here who sell -- if you post what you want, you'll likely hear from them.

How did you spot the little red one ? I am curious to see how the lighter ones and the red one grow out. Gonna take lots of pics as they mature to have as reference for future breeding.

because I was looking very close and she/he? caught my eye....so now that one is my favorite

yep gotta take lots of pics at least some once per week...at least that is what I did..but I did it just for fun.
