Who here has added acorn feed for their chickens?

Knowing the nutrient benefits, we are looking in this as a winter supplement as acorns are overly abundant on the farm.

We know about the tannins in the acorns and how to purge acorns of it. Also, the acorns must be fully ripe and of the white oak tree type.

Anyone got feedback here?

What a MUDDY DAY!

Got to the farm and 2 of my front breeding pens were little rivers

I had to get in the mud and sunk about 4-5 inches every step

I had to dig little channels for the water to leave the pens. It was coming in on one corner and I had to go out and dig another path for that water to go another way around the pens. Hubby said the breeding pens in the back were a mess too but most of those will drain..... eventually. I didn't even stop to look at those today. Tomorrow I will check them out.

The big project was the wet weather creek in the back. The drain pipe was plugged so we had to fix that. The water was up to hubby's butt and when we left it had drained to about 4 inches above his knee. We checked it one more time before we left and we could see the pipe. The water was coming over the road so we had to do something or it would wash it out again. We also saw a coyote for the first time. He has to go....

Our 3 neighbors front yards were about 4 feed deep in water.... really up to the road. There is a spring that runs under there and drains some in our creek. This was a BIG rain. I have not seen it do this since the BIG flood, but it was not as bad.

Next I need some gravel... I have had enough of this.

I had about 3-4 inches of water in the fence where my chickens free range too! I checked on the a few times throughout the day. They did not seem to mind being wet. I hope they dried off before it gets too cold tonight. I did bring the two Sultans in and blew them dry. They don't repel water like the other chickens do. They looked like sopping wet rats!

I think ALL the rain that could have fallen, fell at the farm.... what a mess. Most of mine are in covered runs so it is only water that managed to make it in though other means. I can't imagine the mess if they had not been covered too.

Nope you saved some to continue on to my place ...where it has rained every day for the past 2 wks and downpoured for the past 24 or so hrs to the point that a tote I had set out to dry {yes really} 2 wks ago, this am had approx. 18 deep water in it, and we got at least 3 or 4 inches more since I checked it. I would very much wish this water to distribute itself better across the yr, b/c i just know I'm going to so want this rain when my garden & pasture turn to dust in the dry season. Also, I have chicken pens to build, this Jan thaw was supposed to be useful, not flood-full !

I told hubby we better get cracking on making more rain barrels... cuz in a few months we will be SOOOOO happy we have 4 times as much as we have now. We left my 8cb ft wheel barrow was left out to clean it.... It was FULL at LUNCH. Rained much more than that after lunch

Well look on the bright side.... If that had been snow we would have what 8 feet of it to shovel

DE is diotomaceous earth (not sure I spelled that correctly).....it is actually ground up fossils and rock that have been crumbled into a powder.....I have gotten 2 different kinds. The co-op has one kind that is more grandular and I use it inside the coop because it doesn't have the dust that the finer kind you can get at Tractor Supply, I add some to their food and sprinkle some on nesting boxes and in the shavings on the floor.. ....I use the TSC finer one in their dust baths and outside. DE organically kills fleas, mites and parasites....they love it added to their dusting baths! Although it is not harmful to humans or chickens it is deadly to insects.
