Welcome , I'm smack in the middle of Springfield, Greenbriar & Whitehouse.
Donna I still have the Blue Copper Marans roo I got from you, he'll be a year old in April. I'm thinking of getting rid of him because the neighbor & wife aren't real happy with his crowing.

Could you use him? I'd work out something with you if you can.

Sorry, I have several replacement roos growing out. I have 2 Blues and 1 Black. The babies I hatched from my roo that died will all get to growout if they have feathered legs.

Hmm...I might just be ignorant or only considering functionality, but I dislike feathered legs when there is a clean legged option on the same breed. I have seen a big emphasis put on marans with feathered legs from the french line...mais pourquoi? The feathered legs make for more functionality problems, non? Unless the eggs are darker or have more nutrients(neither of which seem to be the case), or the french standard has another advantage, then please explain the reasoning.

Black Copper Marans have been admitted to the APA and breeding them to the SOP is important. Feathered legs are REQUIRED of the breed. I personally have not seen an issue in my Marans with feathered legs.

feathered legs are not really important unless you breed them or show them...the only reason I like them is because they lay dark eggs I couldn't care less if they had feathered legs or not because I am not a breeder of them nor do I show them.

ah, ok, now I get it...the standard IS feathered legs, and the ones without are considered to be at fault. Makes sense now as why there was emphasis placed on that quality. I was only thinking of how difficult the silkies were when dealing with free range birds with feathered legs, and thinking how much easier it would be on me if they did not have them. The one marans I have has no feathers and I am happy with it, but then again, I do not show...yet. Not saying I wont, as I remember from 4-H how much prep and pressure is involved. If I get some black english orpingtons to breed into lavender, then it might be worth looking into showing later though.

I am like you feathered legs get a total mess and get stuck together is they are free ranged..and if they are just used for layers and not breeders I see no reason for them to have to have feathered legs

The only thing I don't like about the feathered legs is they get SO dirty when it rains here. And it has been raining a lot recently! I have the same problems with my Silkies - they just get so dirty compared to all our other breeds.

Lots of things to balance in the breed indeed my personal goal is to darken my egg color and breed a little utility back into my flock. I would like to gain the feathering just to keep the masses happy but it is not top priority for me with this breed.
