The Middle Tennessee Thread

Howdy Y'all! We moved to middle TN last September. In the middle of buying a house, getting a job, and settling in last Fall - we heard about the Amish auction in KY to buy our chickens this Spring. Well....naturally...in the middle of now prepping a garden, still working, still settling in, and trying to get situated for our coop, I missed the auction!!!

Ugh!!! Now what? I really want to start my coop with hens who are about to lay and possibly one rooster. Anyone with any other good leads on where to do this? Looking for good layers - brown eggs...no major breed preference really...I think. Thanks!

You missed a great auction !! i went with my brother to buy some laying hens for my mom who is retiring next month and got really into and bought some chickens for myself and have went head over heals crazy over them !!

I just want to let everybody know that the Volunteer State Poultry Club will be hosting its Spring Show on April 27th at the Dickson Fairgrounds. There's still time to enter or reserve a sales space (contact Ami Shelton at [email protected]), or, come just for fun!

A possum got into my chicken coop and got 3 of my light Brown leghorns, and 1 Orpington and 1 jersey giant.after that 5 leghorns died,I did not know what happened but I noticed the night before some of them died they puffed up there feathers and walked really slow.....but we put some chicken wire around my chicken cage and the possum has not gotten any since!we also found a milk snake just hangin out In the coop...he got a nice hit in the head with a hoe...I have been working out in my garden a lot so the chicks r free ranging a lot!It is so fun to watch them be happy, run and play, and get lots of bugs!

Yikes! I had no idea a possum would do that kind of damage. My folks had one break in a few times but it was only after the chicken feed. They had raccoons working on the gate latch. The electric lines they added stopped all attempts.

How did the possum get in? So sorry. And the SNAKE--I think I would have had a heart attack!

Does anyone have pullets for sale in the next few weeks? I'd prefer 6-8 weeks old or so. I'm looking for 3, and I'm flexible on breeds. I cannot have roosters, so I have to be sure on the sex.

One of our hatchery Buff Orpingtons died from being eggbound. :( I actually thought she was getting better, since she seemed to be acting normally, but unfortunately she didn't.

Welcome to the new folks, sorry for the loss due to possum.
I'm almost embarrassed but this is my " TEMPORARY " coop.
400
think i'll call it the hoopty coop. My girls have been living in the basement since the tornado, almost 3 months so they'll just be happy to be outside. I still have to build a gate and a nest box. Other than that its pretty much done. Total cost 0.00
