The Middle Tennessee Thread

Our resident red tails are less of a threat than the migration that comes in Fall. Around October, we have many, many more than usual and they are hungry and bold. The trees are simultaneously providing less cover. That was how I lost by biggest Welsumer hen when I ran in the house for a few minutes. She was under brush in the forest where you'd think she'd be at low risk. I saw the hawk responsible when I came back and it was reluctant to leave even with me yelling and throwing stuff at it. Pretty sure it was a Northern Goshawk by size, coloring, and the long tail. My Wellie's neck was broken -- that hawk knew how to make a kill. I've had two other attacks in the yard by juvenile red tails. One was thwarted by a rooster and the other simply couldn't get a good hold on a loose-feathered puffball. Both escaped with only a fist full of pulled feathers. I range under pretty close supervision and still can't prevent losses to raptors.

I raise sheep and was talking on the Sheep-L list to a shepherd out in Colorado. She had an eagle swoop down and snatch a hen. Her guard llama hustled her sheep into the shelter then went after the eagle by rearing up and trying to strike it out of the sky. But the eagle had gained too much altitude with the struggling chicken. So as last resort he spit a wad and hit the eagle in the head. The startled eagle dropped the hen and the eagle got the heck out of there. They had anti-air defenses!

I have had a red tailed hawk try to take a guinea before. He had to pull up because at the last moment he realized that there was a fence line in the way. He sat on the fence looking at the fat guineas so disgusted with himself for missing that point. I have bought a net off of ebay to discourage that with my new chickens. You can suspend it between trees or make supports that suspend it over the areas that you range you chickens. It's main purpose is to prevent aerial attacks not to keep ground predators out of a pen. You can even weave ribbon into the net and turn it into shade cloth. Now I got one of the super cheap ones from China. I will let you know that even though it's dimensions were given as a rectangle it is actually somewhat more like a trapezoid, but it is large enough to serve my purposes and was the right price for my budget.

I am about an hour from nashville and do you have a pic of him? I dont have a specific breed in mind but I dont want the naked neck, and I want him for many reasons breeding as just one of them
I'm near Chattanooga. I have 5 roos the age of 7 weeks that will need to go. If you want Olive eggers. I also have 6, 7 day olds and 8, 1 days olds. I'm sure half are roos. That is all I breed now is Olive egger and Easter Eggers. I gave up on Marans when the dogs from the house 20 acres away come over for a fun run and killed a few of them. It took all I could do not to shot them! I keep bottle rockets for that reason now. I don't want to be the one who shots someones pet. Being pit bulls I was not going off my porch to run them down. A call to the animal control a visit from the police. They have not showed up again. I was told I could take them to court to pay for my lost chickens. I was also told I can protect my livestock anyway I can. I just don't think I could.

Buy a paintball gun. It works marvels on dogs. One or two things happens or maybe both. 1. The dog thinks he is really hurt and bleeding because of the wet paint and never comes back. 2. The owner sees the paint and realizes that it could have been bullets and ties the dog up and he never gets out again. I have never had a dog show back up that I hit with a paintball gun. I resorted to that not because I didn't want to kill a dog for killing my sheep or cats but because I don't have a clear field of fire all around my house. At least 180˚ of the area I could risk hitting someone if I fired that way. So I took to paintballs.

Guess to each his/her own... Up here on the Rim its understood that any animal chasing another man's livestock is guaranteed dead... just lost a silkie chick to my brother's dog but that I'm not holding that one against it since the chicks found a hole I didn't see. Neighbors always seem to be getting new cats and we always seem to be killing "feral" cats. Granted there isn't a livestock law here in Tn so the 3 S rule is generally followed. Point being if it wants a chicken dinner well I'll feed it a lead sandwhich..

Tennessee is a LONG state...where are you? I typically dont keep extra roos that long. Are you going to use him for breeding or what? Do you have a breed in mind? Oh i have a SLW roo about that age or a little older. They are very calm roos. And VERY pretty too.

I have no problem killing ANYTHING that's after my chickens or any of the animal's or people here. I made that decision really early in my chicken adventure. So far I have decreased the wild cat population by around a dozen, the possum population by around 3 & the masked bandits by 1. I have no problems with dogs here but do hear the occasional coyote. I have seen hawks overhead but never had a problem with them & the chickens. Now tornadoes are a whole nother story. I'm glad I didn't have to tangle with the one that killed over half my flock. Them things are just plain ruthless!

alright..... I guess this is where I belong..... seeing as I live about an hour from Nashville. not really posting anything specific....just wanted to say hello to fellow middle Tennesseeans.
