The Middle Tennessee Thread

Lost my first fluffy butt last night. I did all I could but she just did not make it. Wow...she was one that would not let you touch her much less hold her unless you got her off the roost so for her to let me hold her to syringe feed her and clean that gunk out as much as I could was the warning to me that she was in much worse shape than I thought.
Now, I need advice on what I should do about cleaning/sanitizing and taking care of the other chickens. If this happens to you, what do you do? Other than roosting, she only had one other chicken she would get close to her. She did not want to be touched (one of the reasons her name was Skitzy) and would run away from humans and peck the other chickens if they came too close. All of the chickens use the same coop and run so I thought I would get some advice about cleaning their home since Skitzy got sick and died.
Sorry for your loss....it's hard. I lost one to Mareks (even though she had been vaccinated) but thank the Lord no one else got sick or affected by it. I separated her as soon as I saw something was wrong, definitely clean out and scrub down your sick area, as for my big coop, I cleaned it out as usual, roosts included, put down the DE, sprayed everything including the girls with poultry protector and put in fresh shavings.....knock on wood it's been several months and all is ok......did you ever find out what was wrong with her?

Holly and Jonathan-

major catastrophe at the farm - computer crash after the flood- we lost both roosters and 1 of the 2 chicks.

Here are the 5 girls and 1 chick if you are still interested- if not I do understand. It is hard to breed chickens without the rooster.

1st 3 pics are the hens. They are all looking particularly dirty/molty but I have pictures of them kicking butt at the shows. The last 3 are the chick- he is not from my bloodlines and pretty sure he is going to be a he so there is hope for decent chicks for next year. He does come from a nice show breeder.

They grew up using these little bowls and still feel they have to wash in them.

Cotton- one of the ganders. Short neck and lots of fine curls. Very happy with the girls he fathered this year. Direct Holderreads.

Dandelion turned out so pretty and so rotten...they all like to knock on the back door for treats.

2 of this year girls- they are so white. Really like the rounded heads and shorter necks from this years goslings.

One of this year's girls...all are about the same on breast feathers...I only hatched girls this year.

This pose really made me laugh...I have trouble chewing gum and walking...no way I could do this yoga-ish type thing.

Definitely not a Leghorn! I feel so badly for folks who go in to get chicks that will be good laying hens and end up with meaties. I'm glad you're OK with it. Did the feed store mislabel or was the Leghorn ID made as a guess on a fuzzy yellow chick?
not real sure. Came from TSC. They said she was a leghorn but to us she was just a pretty yellow chick the same size as the others we bought that day. lol we did a lot of research before and made sure we had everything we thought we needed before getting them home but then we realized just how little we knew! Still a learning process for me day by day. I have come to love having chickens and would not want to ever not have them!

no. She had thick yellow mucus. She never would let people get close to her so she is one that we probably did not check on as thoroughly as the others. That's where the name Skitzy came from. She was always a thin bird and never a noticeable weight loss when she would be running around. We had not taken her out of the coop to check her for 3 or more weeks because the others were not showing signs of mites or lice. She was the one that would always stay at the outside of the 'crowd' of chickens and would let others get the treats close to us so she did not have to come close. She was given to us as one of a pair of grown chickens and never laid an egg while we have had her. The other chicken was the top chick and has laid eggs since about 5 days after she came to us (once we let them out of the coop/run area). Skitzy would be the one to stand at the bottom of our back steps and tell us when the top chick was dusting in my herb garden! lol I am going to watch the others carefully and since they do let us hold them we can actually check on them a little easier. She was skin bones and feathers so I will be watching for any weight loss and making sure I see each one eat and drink and poo while I am outside in the next several days. We kept Skitzy in the tractor after Matt said something was wrong so we will sanitize it before we let any of the others inside.

Hi Lori! I have a "Liesl" this year too- lol. I am afraid she's going to turn out to be a boy though. Too many of the babies are ridiculous friendly.

I do not do shows. Never had an interest. White roo over 2 browns, 2 blue/grays, and a white female. Have 4 whites I will prolly take to auction soon (2 roos and 2 females) just because I don't really have room and they were born right before Easter.
Those 4 I acquired and hate to sell but gotta downsize. My "breeders" offspring will be black, white, grey-blueish, brown, and then I've had 2 types of striped/speckled which were brown and blueish-grey/white.
