The Middle Tennessee Thread

This one keeps a close eye on me lol. I have 1 out of the 10 that's trying to get pasty-butt so I'm keeping a close eye on it. They are hilarious. I forgot how much I miss having babies lol.

Try a little oil on their butts after you clean them and trim any fuzz or feathers around their vent too. If it can't stick to anything it might not build up. I find different feeds make them get more pasty butt. Coop chick started seems the best I have tried. Edwards and Tuckers both give pasty butt to LITTLE chicks.

I did the oil :) I walked thru with chick, oil, and qtips and my dad asked if we were having fried chicken already, lol. I have the chick starter, usually have good luck with it. This is my "runt" so we'll see.

Hello I live in east TN but I have a question because I have had no luck on the east TN thread. Does anyone in middle TN breed show quality brahmas or brahmas of different colors? I am looking to purchase some even if it is only a trio of started birds. I would take chicks as well. I am looking for the nice quality ones I recently picked up some nice darks from a man in NC. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Yeah, it always feels suspiciously like basting them when you put olive oil on their little tushies.

Too funny.
Reminds me of my 1st time w/ baby ducks--
I knew their mom used her oil to help them shed water/float when young, so when mine were about 4wks old and the weather was amazing I wanted to let them have a first try in a 4x6 shallow "pond" ie water catchment we had so I figured that rubbing some food grade cooking oil on them would do the trick. The DH made all the fried chicken/ duck al la orange jokes etc. which of course made me more interested it taking them for a swim.
Well they LOVED the water and swimming for about 2 mins. then I realized they were all slowly _sinking_ and it had gotten to where the water was lapping over their backs!! The DH was none too thrilled to have to step knee deep in the muddy "pond" to help me reach my 6 sinking ducklings. oops...waited a few more weeks b/f they got to go swimming again ;>

Hey everyone! New member to BYC here. First time this year i'm diving into the urban chicken movement. Coop going up this weekend and i'm in the market looking for 3-4 max pullets, as young as possible. I have a few breeds in mind, but my biggest hurdle has been finding someone or some place CLOSE that doesn't have minimum order requirements. Any tips/help is much appreciated!! Thank you!

Where are you located? The Rutherford Co-op has chicks and Tractor Supply probably does too.

At the moment I have three barred rocks available that are 5 months old. They are at point of lay. DMRippy has a zillion different breeds, so she is a great bet. There are a ton of other people on here breeding as well. List what you are looking for and someone will probably pop up and have it.

Welcome to the Middle TN Thread!

Here are the specific breeds i'm interested in after doing research. You guys probably know more than me, so any breeds that have similar characteristics i'm interested in. Instead of "wants", I only have two "DONT wants" - No aggressive breeds and I don't want any "flighty" birds.

Barred Plymouth Rock
Buff Orpington
Rhode Island Red
Easter Eggers
Ameraucanas
Dominique

Looking for 3-4 pullets as young as possible, preferably day to week old but beggars can't be choosers so i'm open to anything close.
