I keep wood mulch (not dyed and not cedar- that could cause respiratory problems) and leaves in my pen for deep litter. Throw some scratch every day and they are happy to compost it for you. And no mud.

Deep litter might work for some but it does not work well for me or outside. When I used pine shavings in the COOP (not the run) they would kick it out in the run. That made a layer that acted almost like a water barrier and made the water just sit on top never dried. I don't use pine shavings outside, to much work for as many birds as I have. I use sand in the coop and nest boxes that way if they kick it out no problems. I tried leaves too.... never again. AGAIN these thing might work on a small scale if you can do cleaning more often but for big numbers and pens If I could get away from pine shavings ALTOGETHER I would. My new brooder will not have pine shaving and if I can figure out a way my bigger brooder for older birds will not either. I have been composting my pine shavings for over 2 years and still I have pine shavings that have not changed at all. I am trying to reduce the pine shavings and up the poop to help the composting..... lets see if that works.
Everything that I have read says that the Marans region of France is a swampy part of the country. I guess their love of the mud is in their genes....We traded an old car that ran for a ROOF on my breeding pens. Best trade I ever made LOL. I did see a leak today though..... in a Marans pen too LOL. The Marans tend to LOVE THE MUD.... is it muddy in France?
Spring can come and stay a LONG TIME.... without all the rain.
I used a vet that treats chickens and she sent the hen off for $25 …worth it to me not to have to do it. She's not that far from you …off 840…. Dr Jennifer Hatcher 6545 Arno Road, College Grove 368-7873I only know of the Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville. It is free. You would take I-24 in to Harding Place...it's probably about 15 minute drive once off the interstate. You can maybe find a vet nearby, but they would probably charge a fee ??? I don't know...
Sorry about your hen. It's so frustrating to know something is wrong, but you can't seem to make it right.![]()
Actually the whole visit was $25….exam included and then she kept her until she passed and sent her off the called me with the results.I used a vet that treats chickens and she sent the hen off for $25 …worth it to me not to have to do it. I have a coworker from France and she was walking down the road one day when she saw my chickens. She asked about breeds and I pointed out my cuckoo Marans. I told her how they were great free rangers, docile, disease resistant, and my favorite chickens. She interrupted me and smugly said, "That is because they are French and the French are better at everything, even breeding chickens." And then she walked away, leaving me open mouthed and without a comeback. lolWe traded an old car that ran for a ROOF on my breeding pens. Best trade I ever made LOL.
