The Middle Tennessee Thread

We put an egg under our Cochin and she has been setting pretty well but yesterday she got off the nest for her daily eat, drink and stretch. Well, she got back on the wrong nest and we aren't sure how long but the egg felt cool. Luckily it was one of the 75 degree days. The egg had just shy of a week left to go. What are our chances?

They will probably be ok. I have had the incubator off overnight maybe even 2 and they still hatched. Might not all be ok but you will get some.

I had 25 outta the 35 tht made it to lockdown hatch. I jus candled the othr 10 and didnt see any movement so i turned off my bator. Not sure wht happend but i culd tell they were developed and could see some veins but no movement. Im still tickled wth my hatch since this is only my second one.

What day is it? Mine are still trying to hatch and they were due Saturday. I have had them hatch as late as day 25. Did you check them from the top and bottom? Sometimes you can see that they are not what you thought if you look from the bottom.

I will double check them tomorrow and see what is going on with the really late pips.

Well, After much tweaking this weekend over the new incubator, I got it stable @49% humidity and 37.6 c temp 99.68F. If the humidity drops below 45% an alarm goes off. I took the Styrofoam that it came packed in and modified it, so the drain holes matched. So temp isn't my problem now. I don't think. The unit has a fan so I think 99 is good. The humidity is what is confusing me atm. The how too books/websites I have read vary. Most say 60% till lock-down then up o 75%. The pamphlet that came with the incubator said 50% till lock down then 65%. Others say 20-40% then 50-80% Unless told other wise I am just going with 49% then up to 63%. Keeping the humidity down is hard. My central heat and air crashed. Till we can get it fixed next month we are at the mercy of the weather. Maybe my power bill will be below $100 this month. I haven't seen that in years! Always looking for that silver lining LOL.

Use a fan in the room to keep the air stirring. You can put a cup of dried rice in the incubator to keep the humidity down.

I finally got ahold of the babie goats one billy and a Nannie.
400

I also have 4 trios of silver sebrights sold plus 3 more hens so I will have about ten left if any one is intrested. One hens beak is crossed so I will just keep her as a pet. The other 45 seabrights will be ready the 22nd of May.

Thinking I need some guineas...Came in from outside after just 2 hours of sitting in a chair watching the kids play and had 2 ticks crawling on me! I already have 35 free ranging chickens, but live in the middle of nothing but cedar trees everywhere! Ticks out here are crazy!! Can't even go outside without getting covered in ticks everyday.

I swear by them! We were just covered in them before and now after just 2 years I don't find them often even on the dogs and ythey roam a bit. They can be loud but I think it's worth it. I HATE TICKS!!

Me too! I have never wanted guineas before, but already the ticks are making me crazy! I found two on my Saturday after working in my flower beds. Arg. I hate the little suckers.

So I live close to the road. Across from me is a park/baseball field. Will the guineas get in the road and will they mess up the ball field? I don't want to annoy the neighbors. We have coyotes and assorted predators as well. Do your guineas go back into a coop at night or do they roost in the trees?

Well, I was wondering how long I should let this hen sit on these eggs that were due to hatch yesterday... Another few days I guess? I haven't candled them since 2.5 weeks, didn't want to disturb them.
