The Middle Tennessee Thread

Well, I received some eggs through the USPS today and it looks like someone had a really good time with them. I was surprised to only find one cracked. I figured when I opened it I would find just a gooey mess.

I definitely believe I would file a claim with them. That is ridiculous, looks like they ran it over. It was sent Priority Mail, supposedly better than just regular mail and it costs extra. Maybe they will be more careful next time.

Make sure you document everything you find.... you can file a claim with the PO for damages. That is crazy!

Yes, we are going to the post office first thing in the morning. All of the air cells are wobbly. I will let them set for 24 hours and then place them in the incubator still in the egg crate and not turn for 5 day like was suggested on the thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/704328/diary-notes-air-cell-detatched-shipped-eggs
Very disappointing!

I don't know that they can help you much at the post office. They can give you the form to file the claim but you can file the claim on line. I would wait till 7 days and candle them and take pics when you candle. The more evidence you have when you file the claim the better.

Ok I wasn't aware of that. I've never filed a claim before. That's what I will do. Thanks guys!

Don't submit it till you have EVERYTHING it asks for. It will ask for an invoice or some kind of bill of sale. The tracking number, evidence (photos) anything else you can think to send to prove your case will help. I have never filed for eggs.... just dead chicks.

I know that your not supposed to put straight manure on your garden, but does that include the being flakes from a deep bedding system? Can I put the wood flakes on the garden directly or do I need to let it compost first?

The chicken poop is too HOT to put on the garden.... you really should let it set for a winter or a year what ever comes first LOL. Some plants might could handle it like corn if you put it a little bit WAY from the plant but it really would be best to let it set. Wood chips don't compost well... I have found that out the HARD way. 3 year of compost piles and not composting. We are trying to eliminate shavings as much as we can.
