I wanted to ask if any of you have had a chick hatch that seems to breath through it's mouth. This chick is a beak breather. It huffs and huffs. It was weak and shrinkwrapped but had pierced a hole to the outside to breath. I helped it a bit and it finally kicked out of its egg. The yolk was just barely enclosed. I had to tape its legs because they splayed. It hate it and keeps pecking it to get it loose. It has gotten stronger but it doesn't seem interested in water or food yet. It is 2 days old. I made it drink a few drops of water today but that made his breathing start clicking like he had aspirated some of the water.

I also was wondering if any of you can identify what color this chick might feather out (if it makes it).

chicks can go 3 even 4 days without eating or drinking. I wouldn't force feed or water it yet. Let it rest. From what it sounds, it had a hard time hatching. Not to be mean but I stopped helping chicks out of the shell. The ones , usually the last to hatch, you have to help out never make it or there is something wrong with them. Every time. But again, just let it rest and see how it's doing.

I have a Dominique a breeder gave me for free because she was worried she wouldn't make it with her other chickens and was a runt who had to be helped out of her shell. She made it with 2 crooked toes ( which I should've straightened I know now ) and she's now the same size as my other Dom pullet and lays 1-2 eggs a day! She was also first to lay. It could've been improper humidity that stopped your chick from pipping properly, not genetics.

I think it was because I came home from work and the humidity had dropped to 10%. Eventually I am buying a humidifier that you set the humidity that you want and it keeps it there.

Sandhill Preservation has Black Spanish. They would be sold out by now but you could get poults in the spring. Place your order as early as you can after the first of the year.

They decided they wanted to nest in the woods instead of their secured area and something got them.

Well I got it to eat tonight. I mixed some baby food carrots with some turkey cat food and some ground Chick Starter. Peep is in with the baby quail. Peep is getting up on it's feet now and walking is improving though it still resembles a drunk staggering at times. It's breathing is more normal tonight. It can see but spends a great deal of time with it's eyes shut. I think it may be photosensitive. Hence what made me think of baby food carrots. I have successfully cut down my own sensitivity to light by eating carrots. Kind of over did it. I was in Texas at the time and I began to tan orange.

Does anyone near Jamestown have any hatching eggs available? I have a broody, but no eggs

I have 2 hens currently raising chicks, 2 more that have been brooding for a couple of days and I now have another in the nest box sitting on air. I had to clear out my incubator to give eggs to the other 2 girls, and now I have nothing to give to the newest broody!
I'd really love to have some Ameraucanas, Marans, Easter Eggers, Barnvelders or Welsummers (not asking for much, huh?), though I'm pretty much open to any standard sized breed. She could probably cover about 6-8 eggs.
Please let me know if you've got any to spare!

OK, my 7 month old Buff Orp hatched 12 chicks out earlier this week. So far so good, she takes them out during the day to forage with her and at the day they go back to the stall they were hatched in. It is not secure like the coop or my brooder. Should I move them to the brooder or just leave them alone.
