The Middle Tennessee Thread

I called the TN. Department of Agriculture and talked with the outreach coordinator. The requirements for resale if you have less than 3000 birds are:

No license required.
Unused egg cartons that have your name, address, and the word unclassified on them
The eggs must be washed and sanitized. For sanitizing you can use a solution of 1 T. bleach / gal. water (YUK!) or a vinegar solution (better).
and that's it.
There is also a poultry processing exemption if you process less than 20,000 birds/yr., but I didn't get all the particulars about that.

They were very friendly and helpful!

Fun fact-
In Europe it is illegal to wash and egg for resale. They feel it promotes uncleanliness if you wash them. They may be smarter that us. There is a new study out (from Sweden) that kids have more allergies if their food has been sanitized/sterilized/disinfected.

Thanks for calling and clarifying. Always better to get info "straight from the horse's mouth"!

I can't get it to copy/paste!!

Here's a screen shot, you can see the main websit name at the top:

I talked to a guy at the ag department back when they tried to require you to get a permit and meet state standards (you DON"T have to do any of that) and he said WE DO THE CANDLING OF EGGS NOT YOU! very adamant about it too.

400

So sweet! Sorry for the loss of the other one.

I talked to Mike Brown, outreach coordinator. He is located at Ellington. He said if you put the word "unclassified" on the carton candling is not require. If you want to grade them a certified candler has to candle them. Apparently there is a training to be a candler, but that didn't interest me so I didn't get that info.

Anyone else have back copper marans taking their own sweet time about starting to lay this spring? I am hatching lots of breeds already but the marans are what most people are wanting and mine won't lay.

Mine are laying like crazy. I just don't have my breeding pen ready to do any major hatching from yet.

NOW NOW I don't have that many...... I only have 4 Copper Marans, 3 Cuckoo Marans and maybe 9 or 10 black or birchen pullets. Those are the ones in the breeding pens.... the rest are for sale LOL. Most of my marans eggs are just for eating right now.
