NEED HELP!!! my birds have finished molting and seem to be back to normal….I'm giving them a bit of scratch with their food to beef them up for the winter that may never come…LOL….and I'm giving them extra protein but it's been weeks since I've gotten an egg. Only an occasional one from my Silkie and now she's gone broody…..what can I do?????

Wait for Dec. 21 when the days start to get longer and then get your egg basket ready for late January and February (if we have any sun). I have also found if I have some pullets just starting to lay at the end of the summer, and/or production breeds of hens (leghorn and isbar for me), they will lay all winter as soon as their molt is over, if they have plenty of protein.

Thanks….don't have any just starting to lay…and no production hens like you mentioned. Mine are about 3 years old and this is the longest they've gone without laying. Molting has been over for awhile. The only thing I can think of is they have gone from free ranging to being in a really good run since summer….but they were laying in the summer it's only been since fall and molting that they have stopped….hopefully after the 21st things will pick up because I'm stumped ( also been giving them plenty of meal worms and left over protein from our dinners)

Some breeds, like leghorns, quit laying at 3 yrs. old. I think they all slow down a bunch as they age, but the eggs get larger as they reach the end of their laying cycle. I guess it is kinda like menopause.

Stop the scratch they don't need it.... kinda counters you extra protein. They need light. Age will also play a role too. I like to always have new pullets going into winter so I can have eggs.

White Leghorns are the only HIGH production leghorns I have ever owned (I have MFL, IL, Ex and Brown Leghorns). Other color Leghorns don't hold a candle to WL. Never had one slow down are stop as they age either. I have a hen that is pushing 3 and she still is a great layer of huge eggs. She laid an egg for an egg and more than a pullet Rhodebar and they were much bigger. Diet I think plays a bigger role than anything. Hatchery birds can BURN OUT but I have even heard of hatchery BR that were still laying at 8. Typically I don't keep birds after 2 years. They don't hatch as well to the end of the 2nd year so they just become someone's layers.

Folks, I'm still very new to the forum and BYC. I live in smith county. Are there any Mennonite feed mills near us? I'm looking for a custom blend of feed that includes the following (all non-gmo of course):
Whole Cracked Corn
Whole roasted Soybeans
Whole rolled oats
Kelp (sea weed)
Fish meal
Fertrell Poultry Nutri-balancer

I'm moving from VA to TN, and going through the fun of bouncing back and forth right now trying to get the house in VA ready to sell and get the farm in TN ready for spring. I have a Mennonite family in the Shenandoah valley willing to deliver the mix i'm looking for, but shipping is 2/3 the cost of the feed. I'd welcome any thoughts on the subject...

I don't know about the feed your looking for but we just moved from Florida to Tennessee this summer. I found a local feed store that carries Tucker feeds. You might try them , so far I've been really happy with them.
