The Middle Tennessee Thread

Darling husband finished the enclosed chicken run this weekend and the chickens spent alot of time outside and seemed to enjoy it. As soon as I figure out how I'll post pictures! The kids loved to just sit there and watch the chickens. The dog wasn't too sure about them at all. But the chickens were fascinated with him!

Not sure they'll get to spend any time outside tomorrow though!

I'm looking for a Silver laced Wyandotte Rooster if anyone has a spare.Actually I'm not looking but a friend of mine is.They have hatchery stock so he doesn't need to be perfect
He's willing to pay a reasonable amount but really isn't interested in Foley's prices considering his quality isn't that high.

We ordered from McMurray Hatcheries. I wanted to get some layers/meat birds and break my husband in slowly to a very addictive habit, hehe. He's never had chickens. MM seems to have a good selection of okay birds at a decent price. Were not showing so I think we'll be okay with hatchery stock. I should have ordered some more prolific bannies though -- he wants picked banny eggs and the sebrights probably won't do the job, LOL. I banned him from eating their eggs, hehe.

My poor neighbor (well, I am not quite sure HOW he managed this, LOL) bought some "hens" from a nice, feeble old lady (his words!) around here. She even showed him the eggs they laid ... He got them home and they all started to CROW

. Better watch granny, she's got them shifty eyes!

I am hoping when I get ready to breed really good stock I can maybe get chicks from someone on BYC that lives around Crossville.

Whats the best laying banny? He is really keen on pickled banny eggs, LOL. Silkies lay well? Maybe game bantams? I just read they lay very well? What about those BB Games?

13 Days left!!

Wow 65 mile per hour winds here. I was scared. I did not know what to do with all my babies. I put all chickens in the coop and all babies in one bath tub I was in the other. We are out of the danger zone in Woodbury and I sure hope everyone else is fairing this nasty weather well.

I have a few of those talking hens if he needs more

Someone just asked me if my EE roos would lay green eggs...told them by gosh if they laid an egg it would be GOLDEN..he ha I would be rich if I could come up with a egg laying rooster
My bantam Cochin's lay real well when they are not broody.I have a nest box full of those tiny little eggs every day.
Hatchery birds don't make good meat birds..they have bred out the meat in the dual purpose breeds..unless you like to pick bones.Since the roos are not worth eating we just give them away now and are working on a real meat bird..
Hey Jenski-we have added some Shamo's to that meat bird project.I know how you like them prehistoric dinosaurs we have running around here.

This I'm not sure about they are mini Dinos I know they are..no way are they a chicken
We keep loosing power here but it comes back on...looks like it's finally breaking off though so I can leave without worry.Generator only helps when someone turns it on.So far we have a bator of wheaten Ameraucana a few OE more of those meaties and a few bantam Cochins..seeing a few pips in the Marans.

Tisha - hope you're ok now! I wondered what the wind speed was. Do you have a way of measuring?

Our valley flooded once more. I think I'm going to have to move the coop/pen. The water was over a foot deep in the pen, halfway to the floor of the coop. Two girls must have tried to ride out the rain under the coop and we saw them pressed up against the chain link on the high side, only about 4" deep. I still can't get a boot on so Ron was out trying to unblock some areas to let the water run out of our yard by himself. When he went to the pen to rescue the girls, the silly things flew up onto the outside roost.....guess they don't have much in the thinking department, eh?

Ron opened the chain link gate and scraped the built up straw out with the water so at least I won't have near as much to do to clean up the pen.

How's everyone else making it? No damage I hope!!!

It's nice to know computers may be smarter but common sense gets us a lot further in life than being "smart"
