This, we're good - not enough water to accumulate thank goodness! Way too much wind - sunflowers, garlic blown over, the willow bent sideways. How's it out yer way? Coops ok?

Minuteman, I've gotten DE at the Co-op in Rutherford Cty so maybe they'd have it at the one out yer way? Home Depot has it as well, in case you've got one there.

It's too stormy to get outside so I'll just stay here and bother you all!

Yesterday I was out in the pen with a friend who may build an addition on to my coop so I can get a few more chicken-type varmits (hush, now ~ you people are a bad influence!). Saw a black snake had climbed up the chain link and was twisted up in the black plastic deer netting I have across the top of the pen. Mike cut him loose while I held his head (we both had on good leather gloves). He'd stressed enough to start loosing some scales, but I'm hoping we got to him in time. I'm pretty sure its a black racer, saw him last year, sunning in my island garden under the sprinkler. Has anyone ever had one get into their eggs?

Now for the really good news!!! I know this isn't the right forum for this, but I like you all (really!) and want to pass this on......

For about the last 6 months I've been having weird joint pain, almost like arthritis, but it moves around. Sometimes there's swelling, sometimes a burning sensation. I don't do doctors if I can help it (which is most of the time) so I tried various natural remedies, to no avail. Then I remembered customers from the health food store saying that was one of their symptoms of Lyme disease. So a month ago I started taking Carnivorq, which is an extract from the venus fly trap. One of the supplements I used to get over the Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever. Anyway, it's not been 3 weeks with no unexplained joint pain!

At all! Who cares what "it" was, as long as "it" is gone!

Pam I am happy you no longer have the random joint pain. I on the other hand started another round of antibotics.

I had to do it. This coughing all night is really wearing me down.
Just a quick note on the DE. I am not sure home depot has Food Grade please check first. I would hate for someone to make a very sad mistake. I think I bought some out in the triune area. I will search my previous post to see can I find it. Be right back.

Food grade DE is sold in several stores here in Lebanon.
Only problem we had last night was the non stop thunderstorm warnings keeping my weather radio very busy.We didn't get anything other than rain thankfully.
Just added 10 laying hens and a trio of Wheaten Ameraucana's to the for sale list...when I get done we will be around 100 chickens

Those babies are sooooo cute! I know I'm not ready to raise babies, but I sure would like to pet somebody elses! Such a shame how your company treated you, Lady! Doesn't seem to be any such thing as loyalty anymore. Hope you'll do okay with the cut. At least it's a good time to be outside..

Now I need more advice - I'm definitely going to get the coop enlarged! I not only want a few more girls, but that way they'll have more room if they need to stay in the coop.

Best I can tell, I have 2 older full size hens (maybe 3 - 4 yrs old?); One part Silkie is at least 1.5 yrs old; another part Silkie is about a yr; and the baby (I still call her that in my head) is a RIR born 8/2 last yr. With such a mixed group, what kind of additions should I be looking at getting? Pullets that are a few months old, yr old hens; or partially grown chicks that won't need special care. I know I will have to segregate them for a spell so I need to get some fairly soon, before the weather gets real hot.

Reading about the various breeds on here makes me think a Marans would suit my needs. The finished coop will measure 4'x8', with 2 nest boxes hanging off the side, each 12"x18". Without pushing the limits, would I be safe to add 3, bringing my flock to a total of 8? I don't think I'll get a roo at this time. Anything else I should consider? Thanks much!

So I took my 3 year old son out tonight after dark and we looked at a couple more eggs. Definitely growing and veining out. Looked at a BBS Maran egg and a Cochin egg. Both showed good veining. My son's eyes got really big and he said "Oh, my goodness". So cute. We'll look at the rest of the eggs later this weekend. Very exciting!
