Hi all. My new little silkies and lone shipment survivor are doing well. I'm convinced that the survivor is a packing peanut, so all those months of choosing what kind of chickens I wanted were for nothing. I had room for three more hens and wanted colored eggs for the kids but have ended up with a packing peanut and two cute little silkies.
I'm thinking we may end up getting a little portable coop for the silkies(DH is going to kill me) as I'm not sure I'll be able to introduce them into a grown flock because they are bantams? Anyone keep silkies with standards? What age were the silkies when you introduced them?
Im just so sad. When we started this chicken adventure we bought a book first and my son wants to read it instead of bedtime stories every night. There are pictures of green eggs all through it and that's what he's talked about and been excited about all along. We got the barred rocks and orpingtons first as the EE's weren't available at the same time. Ordered the EE's and they all show up dead. Now no space for more
Tracyree, I can totally hook you up with some EE chicks. I am about to start up the incubator again and will happily toss some green egg layer eggs in there for you if you like. Almost all of my EEs turn out black or blue.
I have some small black ameraucanas here as well. They are still too little to tell gender, but if you don't mind waiting we can get you a blue/green egg chicken before fall.
If you want something other than blue or black there are others on here that do EEs. Never fear, woman! We can get you all the green egg layers you want!
I'm hatching a few ee right now...mine are seldom solid colored..it's my minty ee hens and some Ameraucana with Levi my blue wheaten Ameraucana Roo.2 are pipping and 2 are out 1 will be browns of some sort and the other is black and brown..have a few others of those about a week old as well.I gave all of my ee eggs away just so I wouldn't put them in a bator.
I keep bantams and big together..the big know who runs the roosts and when there is a bantam in there it's not the big ones :lol
Tracyree- I forgot to answer your question in my enthusiasm to get you some EEs! I knew Holly would have something fun hatching out!
I initially ran my silkies with the big chickens. They did fine with the hens. I seperated them when the roosters got big enough to do the deed. The poor little silkie girls were getting beat up by the boys. Now I have a banty pen and a large fowl pen. Everybody is happy and not smushed. If you don't have roosters, the girls should be fine in with the big girls.
It has been a full day here. My middle niece had her tonsils out this morning. She is home and resting. Unfortunately their air conditioner decided to go out today! Arg!! We are scrambling to try to figure out to do with the puny child in the heat.
Max the Cat went to the vet today with an abcess on his side. He is now shaved and pitiful, but the place has been drained and cleaned out. The vet thinks he was bitten by a brown recluse. Guess I'm going to have to spray for spiders.
My hatch is mostly done, I think. There are six marans out and a bonus silkie/cochin cross. There are 6 more marans eggs in the bator, but since none have pipped I'm thinking we are done. Since my last marans hatch was a dismal failure, I'm pretty pumped about the six. They are awfully cute.
Oh Anne I forgot "your" kitten update..she's just adorable.Right at that age where trouble is just around the corner now..all 4 feet are up and walking..5 kittens and a momma cat that loves to play...so much trouble.
Glad your kitty is doing better..hate those spiders. We have them in our house so we have those sticky traps in our vents and then vent filters so they can't get up that way..they find enough ways with the basement without giving them a tunnel
