Thanks Anne! And thank you all for the wonderful welcome!!!!

I've decided to work with Blue Cochins in the Spring. The new girls seem to be doing well. They are in the coop with the rest of the flock and "seem" to have been accepted. I left the coop open yesterday when I brought them out to see if they'd come out and roam. They did a bit, and bee-lined it right back in the coop. I went out to get them to bring them back in the house before the storm, but all the others were in there with them, no fighting, no squawking, a little growling, and even EATING TOGETHER! So all in all, I was rather surprised!

All my Barred Rocks have turned out to be Roos. I am re-homing two of them this week to a friend of mine who has a horse farm and has been wanting roosters. He has 15 or so acres, but a small area for chickens and a small insulated barn for them. I just don't have enough hens for three roosters and they are starting to fight over the girls. Too stressful on my ladies I think so it's in their best interest to send them somewhere else. Sux cause I raised them since they were less than a day old!!! But the three of them are just getting too aggressive with the hens AND each other. So I guess it's time to go.

Looking forward to the next get together. There are several inexpensive placed in Nashville to meet! Athena's comes to mind, which is a 24 hour Greek Place that caters to large crowds. But if anyone wants to meet in the Nashville area, I'm in!

packing

I have one more day I'll pack soon...I have a Girl Scout camping trip this weekend BRR it's going to be cold..then I have to re-pack for Indy next week. I could have booked a 4 star motel with valet parking for only $60 but they charge $25 for car parking or $36 for valet parking...and they won't allow pets in the motel

so it's cheap motel but I don't care.
I turned on the heat tonight for the first time..the baby buns will be warm.I refuse to turn it on here in the house though

I have a question... When I do get everyone moved around and the babies go out side for the first time (6 weeks and 4 weeks) do I need to add a heat lamp? If so for how long or for what temps? I know in general not to give heat in the cooler weather to the big guys but these little one I just don't know?

Sorry Donna,I'm no help.I don't like my animals cold or stressed so my coops all have heat if it gets real cold. 4 weeks isn't fully feathered so they would need heat on cold days and nights like today...6 week'ers may get by without heat but if you see them huddled looking cold I would add some...I would have it on for them if they wanted it anyway but I don't like to be cold

My last babies moved out of the baby house this week and into a coop. They are actually a few months old but they stayed in today...baby cochin's in the mud they get way too dirty

I put some 4 week old LF in with my silkies to grow out and I put a heat lamp in there last night one corner for them if they want it. Last winter I had a heat lamp going to keep the water from freezing so idk. Do what you think

I am guessing but hopefully they would get acclimated to the cold once they have been out for awhile even if they have heat available. I don't really want to keep a light on all winter...

I will but I don't want to. I read on here it is not a good idea to use heat cuz if they electricity or bulb goes out for what ever reason they could die since they have never been cold.
