Thanks everyone for the great responses! I am already working on seperating them. Just have to pick up some more chicken wire, and have my son put ventilation holes in the dog house and build a nesting box. I will be picking up a childs play house for them to put inside their run so they will have shelter from the rain/elements. My silkies do have pretty nice puffs on their heads, so I wont allow them to free range unless I am out there with them.

Robin, good point. I should have had something set up before I got the silkies. I didnt realize how much smaller they would be when I decided to get them! AND I didnt think my hens, who are all very trained and friendly, would be mean to them! My other hens are gigantic next to the silkies!

ANyhow, this is the first time I have owned chickens, so Im still learning as I go.

There is a lady in Lawrenceburg that has over 100 silkie hens and roosters and that is where I got them. She apparently sells fertilized eggs on ebay and through all the hatching has just ended up with way too many. Said that she cant afford the feed and is selling off some of them.

Do you guys think a silkie roo is necessary for my 2 girls?

Thanks!

Really, there is someone in Lawrenceburg with 100 Silkies. Since I live right there I'm unaware of that breeder. Maybe you should PM me the info so I can direct people that way when I don't have anything for sale.

Does the breeder raise only white or other colors as well?

Only get a rooster if you want to be like the rest of us Silkie breeders, chicks running every where. Although you will have to deal with them when they go broody.

I went to check the temp and humidity in the bator and to my surprise....I had one egg that had a huge external pip......so I immediatley went into lockdown....wasn't due to lockdown til tomorrow at about 11:30 AM.........

I'm glad to see you had a pretty good hatch even this late in the season. I have 12 of 18 at 9 days old now and they already have some wing tip feathers comming in. These are my best looking chicks so far this year. Let me know what you come out with on sexes if you don't mind. We can always do some swapping when I get some from the second Roo.

every hatch is nerve wrecking..it gets easier but at the same time each hatch has it's what's inside and lets see how that pen is doing and I need this and no it never gets any better. Then there is the disappointment when things go wrong.Last week I didn't catch my thermostat was going out and on day 20 it went to 94 for several hours the 2 that hatched out of 3 didn't do well.1 had no use of legs and died the other is weak and not much hope but not giving up either.
Thankfully most are just smooth and you only get the new chick parent jitters.

With my last hatch I had my incubator turned off overnight got in the 80's, then one of the lights went out so the temps dropped again. THEN the hatcher was turned off and THEN BOTH lights blew! All but one hatched and they are all healthy .... so never give up!

OK now for this hatch the Lav AM I thought might die is fine

Keep the updates coming....

Update on the Breeding Pens... We have the roof on 6 or 7 and then ran out... so If all goes well we should be done this weekend. The fencing is privacy fence and is already put together so we just have to screw it in and put the dividers up and we will be done.
