Isn't spring fun with all the chicks? I am thrilled I just hatched a duck from shipped eggs! So far I have resisted buying chicks at the farm supply store, I have so many of my own hatching

I have had no problem resisting... the only sexed pullets I have seen are Production Reds.... now Easter Eggers or Wyandotts I would have been all over them.... I don't go to to many feed stores.... I buy in bulk and have not been to a feed store in weeks. Well once, ok twice, but the chicks I hatched needed wateres I only looked....

Some people at my church just bought their first chicks at TSC and the Co-op last week. Today they were talking about their Ameraucanas and how cute they are. Their kids have named all 20 of them. I decided to let them find out on their own that they're Easter Eggers. And for someone who just wants a few backyard chickens for eggs for the family - what does it matter? I happen to love EEs anyway.

I bought some chicks at both TSC and the Co-op a couple weeks ago - and within a few days decided I was CRAZY because I was already over-run with chicks. I ended up selling them all - along with some that I had hatched - on Craigslist. So I actually made a little (a very little) on them. :)

Hello fellow Middle Tennesseans, I just found this thread and thought i'd chime in. I live near Springfield, Am happily married for soon to be 18 years, I have 2 sons ( 1 currently serving in the Marines in afghanistan) 2 grandbabies ( 1 boy, 1 girl) and a good for nothing cat. ( he's really not that bad). No birds yet, plans are under way now for the coop. I FINALLY talked the wife into it. She thinks its for prepping purposes ( you know like the end of the world ) I just need more critters. I've had dogs, cats, ducks ( childhood easter present) guinea pigs, iguanas, snakes , anoles, hamsters, finches, and 2 pet skunks. ( yes they make good pets ) I havent decided on which type or types of birds i'll get just yet. Or how many .I'm leaning twards 5 hens and 1 roo. Any advice for a beginner?

Build the biggest coop you can afford... you will want more. I don't know how many eggs you eat a day, but depending on the breed you will only get 2-4 eggs a day. The wife will want more for cooking.

My farm is at the Davidson Co Cheatham Co line. I have a house in AC and we live in Nashville at the moment.

And we will be more than happy to help SUPPLY you with chickens and answers... what are you looking for in chickens? Dual purpose? The biggest and fastest roo to grow for eating at my place has been a NH and the pullets lay a good size egg and plenty of them too. That is just me... they are a great overall chicken... large eggs, large roos for dinner.

As for the ticks i dont think they ever went away. Im a outdoorsmen and i was finding them on me in january while hunting so yes probally be a bad year for them.

I went to TSC the other day and seen their chicks but they had like 3 breeds mixed per tub they were in. Wouldnt have known what i was getting or if they were males or females. Also had no kind of thermometer in their to know what the temp was. Poor little things!

TinTennessee... U mentioned prepping, are u a actual prepper or did u just use that as a excuse lol. I have a supply of food and some things put away but nothing major.

I have 8 Dark Brahma Pullets and 2 Dark Brahma Roos that I need to sell if anyone is interested. They are about 5 months old and about to lay. I have to make room for---what else- more Marans!! Just shoot me a PM if you are interested.
Anne and Lori, I had a guy call about the Brahmas but what he really wanted was Silkies so I told him to look for the two of you here.

He just called me about my Craig's List ad. He wanted Silkies so I told him about BYC and this thread and to look for the two of you by Screen name. So I would guess he may say he called me?
