i know this isnt the right forum to ask this in but..... would it hurt to have a few ( think 5 different ) breeds of hens in with a completely different breed roo? i mean as far as the breeding could it cause problems with the chicks? surely the roo wouldnt be picky about the hen he mated with would he, or would someone freak out because i cross breed something? just curious since i've found 5 different breeds i like alot

I hatched 9 feather legged barred EE's in Feb. I love them because they are a mix of my first barred cochin roo that got killed, and the first chicks I ever hatched, which were standard sized barred EE. They mean more to me than any I've paid for, but no one else would want them. It's entirely up to you who you raise together. If you don't want them mixed just don't let them hatch any. Fertile eggs eat just as well.

People freak out with certain breeds. But it is all good. Barnyard chickens.... it is harder to sell chicks (if you are going to) that are mixed. Lots of people have what they like to look at and don't worry about breeding.

i've looked at quite a few, but keep coming back to the barred plymoth rock, the delawares, brahma's, buff orps, and maybe a silkie for the grandkids. i'm not sure what kind of Roo i want but really like the look of the jersey giant or the Crevecoeur would they all get along ok. i dont really plan to sell any, more just the eggs and a few for the dp.

Thanks for the prayers, y'all. Dad isn't doing so great. The shoulder hurts (as is expected), but the bigger problem is these back spasms. They just bend him double. He's on enough morphine to knock out an elephant and it isn't even touching the pain. My dad is really stoic and those spasms make him holler. The doctors don't really know what's causing them. Dad has had back problems before (in his younger days). We're wondering if he has screwed up a disk or something by twisting as he fell. Hopefully we can talk to a neurologist tomorrow and see what is going on. At the moment he can't sit up or walk unassisted. The nurse got him up on the edge of the bed tonight so he could eat dinner and I thought he was going to pass out. It's horrible. Of course he doesn't want to eat anything and that just makes him all the weaker. Sigh. Parents getting old sucks.

The plan at the moment is to get him into an extended care floor (like a nursing home, but not exactly). Mom can't take care of him at home until he can walk around unassisted and that's not going to happen until his back is better. He's not exactly thrilled. The thought is that he would be there a couple of weeks and then go home. It all depends on what Medicare says. They may send him home. I'm not sure what we'll do then.

Lori- thanks for the food offer. Mom is staying there with him. We fixed her up last night with a stash of snacks. Daddy isn't eating the meals they bring him, so she has been eating them. Plus my sister is on break and can run over as needed. I was there all day yesterday and half the day today and got her settled fairly well. You are sweet to offer though.

If y'all would continue to pray for healing I would appreciate it. He is really in a bind right now.

Morning, all. I'm a New Egg and am not able to get on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. I have a single chukar that was rescued and brought to Walden's Puddle where I volunteer. I am keeping him penned to see if he will learn to accept our place as his home. He seems content enough with the chickens but I'd like to get a couple more chukar to keep him company and then, eventually, turn them all out to stay or go as they choose.

Does anyone know where I can get a couple chukar? I don't need the 50 I would have to get from a hatchery!

Thanks.
Carmen

Anybody want 1 blue and silver plymouth rock roo? I will give him away just so I can have the room.

The next batch was 220 eggs... I need to figure out another hatcher..... my other incubator

Hello everyone!!! Glad I found this forum. I am from New Johnsonville TN. My 10 year old son is getting baby chics from our local 4-H program. This will be our 1st chickens ever. They arrive April 30th, and our entire family is very excited. Glad to know there are others from middle TN.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Tammy
