I know nothing about them.

So my yellow squash overfloweth... I put a bunch in the freezer this morning, went out just now to water the garden and found more! YIKES... I don't think they like the cold snap we have been having, because all the babies are dying.

Anyhoo... the squash that looked a bit soft I shredded and gave to the chickens. My dd said they knocked her over trying to get it! Please tell me I won't find them all dead in the morning

Now I need to figure out what to do with all the cucumbers. I don't have a pressure canner...so pickles are out... unless I can find a good cold pack recipe.

I have a great old fashioned sweet pickle recipe if you like sweet pickles. It takes about 15 pounds of cucumbers. :)
It also doesn't have to be cooked or canned. You just make them and jar them up. They keep forever.

My chickens eat both squash and cucumbers. Just toss it all out for your girls. :)

I don't think I have 15 lbs... We don't like sweet... just dill... did some searching and found my grandmother's sooo gonna try to us that.

Thanks!

My 3 month old RIR roo was attacked by my Buff Orp roo... he died... my girl is sad :( He was a beauty....

If anyone would like to start a mealworm farm.... let me know. I can help a few people out. I have about a BAZZILION worms, pupae and beetles. You can get them at all stages if you want..... just PM for more info.

I noticed the cold has slowed mine down, too...so strange...I didn't think it was cold enough to affect them this much. I'm not too worried, though...our zucchini and yellow squash came in early...we have had two types of stuffed squash, boiled cajun squash, zucchini alfredo, zucchini bread (X2) AND given some to SIX other folks. (We are about squashed-out right now...I think the hubby will rebel if I try to feed him any more for a while...

) I've found my girls (pullets) LOVE zucchini and squash...I usually just slice it up a bit and throw it into the suet-holder I use for greens...I've not any issues. BTW, if you have any wild blackberry bushes nearby, I've found they make a GREAT treat for the chickens, too (for some reason this year, maybe b/c of the early heat, all of ours are too bitter to enjoy...but the girls don't seem to mind).
