so I was counting chickens tonight to make sure they all got back in the coop as I do every night, and I was missing one Red Pyle Old English Game Hen...finnally we found her in the fence row trying to sit on 10 eggs!!!! So that is where all of my bantam eggs have been going!!! I wonder how many more clutches of eggs they have hidden

I did the water test and they all sank perfectly they laid flat on their side....I am going to watch them more closely tomorrow and see if she lays there again or if she finds her another spot.
 
I haven't had the opportunity to let mine free range. Mainly due to my sons dog, I'm afraid he'd eat them. I'm thinking of getting some electric fence to allow them some pasture time.
Them laying where you don't want them to seems to be a common occurance. Is there a way to prevent this ? Would keeping them penned untill their all laying consistently in the egg box before turning them out work ?

Yes, keep them penned till they are all laying well in the nest boxes. The electric fence will not keep the chickens in. The feathers insulate them and they can walk right though a high voltage fence. It would keep the dog out, but not the chickens in.
 
Yes it does seem to be a common occurrence in free ranging birds...as far as I know the only way to get them to lay where you want is to keep them up and make it where the only choice they have is to lay in the nesting boxes....and it might work for a few weeks but they will eventually find a nice cozy spot somewhere inconvenient for us...that just comes along with free ranging.
 
I let mine out to free range for a few days while we worked on the coop, adding doors and such. They didn't lay in the nest boxes.... I don't think they laid at all those days. So they don't get to free range anymore. LOL

Well, I converted the space under the Fort/Playhouse into a chicken pen when I had the BLRW chicks...I could just go from there. Realistically, I need to just practice self-discipline before the city makes me get rid of all my chickens! One day I'll have room for all the chickens I want....sigh.
