The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

We live in Michigan the winters get long and are a lot of work we don't have to deal with the heat like you southerners but the cold is not all that great either. We used to keep 4 species of the tree ducks but they struggle with the cold so it means keeping them inside and they didn't thrive doing that either so we decided to no longer keep them. We have an average snowfall of 72" because of lake Michigan, and a lot of nights below zero with daytime highs in the single digits, come January we would love at little warmth.

I can only imagen, never know how yall survive up there in it!

I second that!! No snow here hardly ever.. I think I would rather deal with the heat!

No doubt. I'm freezing before it gets down to 50.

I guess i'm the complete opposite. I can stand the cold a lot better than the hot of summer. But hunting season helps me through the winter and i have nothing to do in the summer.

haha,
yep, I guess you get use to what you are delt.
Had a guy from up north stop by on the way to Florida this year to drop off some birds for me, It was late August, I was fine, not a drop of sweet, but man after 20 minutes outside talking, he was soaked.
Likewise, below 30, I'm a blur if you look at me , I'm shaking so hard, LOL

Yep kansaskid thats how we spend the winter months to hunting and ice fishing, and I can relate to the sweating i was in Florida in June one time and couldnt cross the street without breaking out in a sweat

Has anyone raised Eurasian wigeons here? If you have are they easy too raise? also can i keep them with my Pair of Mandrians, Wood ducks, And green wing teal??

yes, the european widgeon are fairly common in the states. They do also require the permit to sell.
The are for me harder to breed than the american, but not much, most will breed o kay for you. They are very hardy birds too, not hard to keep at all. They will get along with the species you mentioned as well. only ones I tried not to mix with were the americans just for mix breeding reasons. They arent very aggressive, but arent bullied either, so they mix well with about everything in larger collection of multiple species.
