New to BYC and to this thread - hello from Arkansas 🦶- dove into chicken owning with 16 chicks - 6 Pullets (Cali tan - which I also hear isn’t a breed?) and 10 RIR straight runs.
Wish my family luck lol my husband has been raising chickens since birth his mom (my mother in love) has all types of fancy heritage breeds that produce beautiful eggs so here we are now with our own little farmily.

I'm kind of in the same boat. My wife's family has long raised chickens but I am new to it. My wife isn't really interested in it anymore but I am now. My new flock is supposed to be arriving in June.

I love animals so much 🙈 I would own pairs (or more) of all of them if it was ethical and I could afford proper enclosures/food/entertainment. Defiantly not trying to be the next Tiger King. I imagine some people might be burnt out after living the life but we see it as making it more able for us to live off-grid which is our ultimate goal.

what kind of chicks are you getting?

Awesome! What breeds are you getting?
I ordered 15 barnevelders, mainly pullets with a few cockerels. I'm going to raise the whole lot until I can get a good feel on which ones are the pullets, keep four of them and then send the rest off to the in-laws who live out on a farm. Though I might try to keep a cockerel until code enforcement shows up...
