Unfortunately, the 'open border' between Canada and the States now requires a passport. Used to be you just drove up, without ID, and could go anywhere. I think I visited more places in the States when I was a kid than in my own country!Passport to get back in?

At my end of Canada, you have to cross the St. Lawrence so no getting around the border guards on a massive bridge.
