One way to stay in chickens, make a bit of money, and do something different would be to develop a show quality line and win a few awards. Selling chicks can at least pay the feed bill.
IMO, this is not as much fun as developing an entirely new breed or combination of traits. I've spent the last 8 years happily occupied developing blue egg laying Silver Laced Wyandottes. Stabilizing the traits takes a good eye, a lot of time, and lot of generations of chicks.
