The Moonshiner's Leghorn Thread Peanut Gallery

Wow, they are just gorgeous! I really love the sleek thoroughbred build. Most here are just black or bay, kinda boring after a while.

Shiloh (the cat in my profile) is the son of a white cat, but I don’t know if she is dominant white or is homozygous and highly expressive of the spotting gene. She had a black spot on her head. I think she’s dominant white since most of her relatives are white, but her father and some relatives are solid black.
Her mate was an unrelated black and white cat and she produced two litters with four kittens each, three being solid white and one being seal point and white in each litter. It’s some kind of luck that that happened twice, considering that neither Snowbelle nor her mate are pointed, yet carried the gene and the only kittens born not solid white (with spots on their heads) happened to be pointed. Most had black spots on their heads but I think there was one with a brownish spot.
So Shiloh is a very special gift from God, and so is his little sister Mia. 🥰
Shiloh is adorable!
Color genetics in cats is something totally different again. I honestly haven't studied it much, except in that I have chocolate colored cats, descended from a lovely lilac tabby kitty I adopted out of a box at a street fair. They'll throw a pointed kitty sometimes too. My current imitation Siamese is named Climber, Destroyer of Houseplants.

And, crappy pic but the only one I have on this phone, the 4th and 5th generation of chocolate/lilac tabby kitties. The street fair kitty was Thistle, who birthed Dax, who birthed Brook, who birthed Monster, who is pictured here with her newborn daughters Tabitha (standard issue tabby) and Happy (lilac tabby). Each generation has a litter or two and I just keep them. Very rarely I give one away, Happy now lives with my MIL, Tabitha and the rest of the sibs will stay.

How many cats do you have...?

How many cats do you have...?
At any given time, between 15 and 20.

They're barn cats. I do let them come in the house, they are friendly and well cared for, vaccinated, taken to the vet, well fed, etc. But some do fall prey to coyotes, unfortunately. I farm full time, and we're on 400 acres. As you can see from Climber's pic, it is a happy life, full of adventure .... but not always a long life. If they live through their "what were you thinking??" phase (between 1 and 3 years old) I usually have them until their teens, although just last week I lost Dax to cancer at 11.

Overall, I have a LOT of animals. Caring for them, teaching about them and learning about them is what I do. I don't know if it would be considered advertising to post it, but anyone interested can message me for my website.

Kitties!!! I love them! Here’s my other two cats, Snowbelle and Tiger.

They are all indoor outdoor but I am getting some barn cats soon. Tiger tries her best but with just her and Shiloh the rats are absolute pests eating the food and deadly to my chicks. My brother does poison them and try to trap them and blocks the holes but then they just make new holes.

They're so pretty!!

FYI, cats can't handle rats. Mice, yes, and the occasional young, inexperienced rat. But rats are big and fighty, and it takes a dog to take care of them. Our ancestors did not breed 40 kinds of terrier because they're cute. The GSD pictured above guarding her lamb is our main rat killer (coyote guardian, people greeter and even killed a large weasel that got right in the barn) and the Border Collie is learning to kill rats. The cats, sensible creatures, know better than to try.
