Hmm let me think? Like an STD or something?

I have to order eggs or chicks. Spitzhauben are gaining popularity nowadays. So eBay or Cackle for new stock.
I had thought about ordering SDW Leghorns from MM but I am still scarred from the last time I ordered chicks. I can't take opening up another box of dead chicks. :hit

I prefer ordering hatching eggs, even though it is a gamble.

Cackle hasn't done me wrong yet. Most of what I have is from them or eBay. The hard to find Ameraucana came from GypsyHen. The Spitzhauben, Phoenix and blue/black Ameraucana where from Cackle. The Ameraucana past evaluation as a good start for breeding. So I trust them on the breeds I got from them.

I don’t trust MM. Not after their description of Ameraucana and EE. Everyone that's gotten them from MM do not pass evaluation for use as breeding stock for beginners.

Ya I have no faith in the usps to be trying chicks even if I wanted some.
Eggs seem ridiculously high priced so I'm not taking that gamble either.

@Amer I have read that Silver Ginger on a duckwing base produces a cleaner Silver Ginger without autosomal red. If breeding them onto a duckwing base eliminates the autosomal red, that is my goal for the Silver Ginger Leghorns. That won't be hard since I am using Brown Leghorn in the F1 cross. It also won't be difficult to document the hatch down color of chicks and carefully select only the full duckwing chicks in the F2s to breed forward in the project. That will eliminate the autosomal red tones in the males, and make them cleaner looking Silver Ginger Leghorns, eventually.

This is a Silver Ginger Phoenix Bantam from an old Phoenix thread, and this color variety is stunning. I think on a Leghorn this color will be magnificent.

My only experience with MM has been birds we have used as laying stock, aside from the Red Leghorns, and those left a lot to be desired. Their Red Leghorn stock isn't good, but I will work with the one rooster I have from them if tragedy doesn't strike and I lose him, God forbid.

I have gambled on eggs quite a bit this year. It pains me to admit how much money I have tied up in the Leghorn chicks I have right now. But I can't get nice birds locally and I am forced to either buy chicks or eggs and have them shipped. I didn't wish to gamble with the lives of any more chicks in the mail, and leave their lives in the hands of the USPS. So I must carefully nurture them as they grow and pray I don't lose any. So far they are robust and vigorous, which brings me much relief.
