The Moonshiner's Leghorns

How are your new birds liking the cold?
They aren't used to snow!
I have them in the barn so they'll never have to touch any snow. Cold is another story. It'll be in the teens for a couple overnights so we will see.
Yesterday barely got above freezing and they've already been mean mugging me. Iris has laid a couple eggs and pecked me yesterday when retrieving one so ya I don't think they are appreciating the move.

Poor birds and poor you.

OK back to my Chickat birds.....
Its been a bit of a whirlwind and surprising.
I've had some contact with different people concerning them and I'll just post my thoughts here.
First I'm well aware of the opal legbars and who created them.
These birds have nothing to do with the opals. They are not from the opal line.
Genetically they are the same and came from the same two breeds. Legbars and Isabel leghorns.
While the opals were bred to maintain the crests these birds were bred to not have crests.
These birds do not have issues with feather quality, autosexing or any other issues that have been brought up to me except these also still carry the genes to produce some offspring that do not lay blue eggs. Fixing that will be my first concern and focus.
So with that said. No these birds will not be rushed to produce eggs for sell. I have no intentions of getting these out there to fix any opal issues. With those hoping to find a solution its easy. Go back to breeding them to legbars or get strict in your selective breeding the opals.
I have no interest in pretending these are opals, being told these are opals, working these into opal lines or bringing opals into this line.
At this time I would prefer to distance this line from everything related to those.
As of now my plan is getting through winter. After that I have a few plans but it doesn't involve selling eggs anytime soon.
More to follow soon.

That's awesome news.
Glad all is well. Were there any hiccups in the shipping?
If there were, I wouldn't know. I don't understand why the USPS offers tracking when they don't scan the barcode as the package moves. Rather irritating. They marked him as arrived an hour after they called me. But he's here, and seems fine. I assumed he'd want to eat and drink more than he has, but probably just stressed out.

A new 10 year project. These LF Columbian Leghorns are a breeder trio from Oakes and are settling in nicely here at my yard. I am delighted with these birds in type and size. The birds compliment themselves well for breeding in type and color.
