The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Raising chicks over winter isn’t my favorite thing, but some of my projects will take several years unless I can produce 2 generations a year.
Been there done that.
My favorite part was if you hatch in the fall they're laying bright and early spring.
Less down time.
Least favorite providing enough heat and water freezing in waterers

Hopefully once I am done with clinical in September, my pullets will be coming into lay and I can at least hatch a few from the project birds… like the Crele, Silver Ginger, and Red.
I should probably just send you a big old box of randoms.
Double up your projects in 21 days. :lau

Yes and potential power outages killing younger chicks. But we have raised in the coldest parts of winter with only the occasional tragedy, and not too many losses. If I played my cards right I could hatch some, and them be fairly feathered out by January when it starts getting really cold.

There are a few benefits to raising chicks in cold weather though. No flies in the brooder building, and they don’t tend to feather pick because no heat stress. And also, the biggest benefit, as you mentioned, is having the pullets come into lay in early spring.

Four out of five of my son’s Ameraucana eggs hatched. Only one is non-bearded, the rest are hetero for beards. The solo Leghorn egg also hatched (Legbar x Leghorn).

Oh so you don't have them anymore? Do you have any pics of them? I don't mind them being small, as long as they have a clean silver and actually survive shipping. I can work with size by breeding a rooster with a good sized GDW hen.

What variety of Leghorns do you have now?

Sorry, I just saw this. No, I don’t have them anymore for now. my divorce was just finalized and part of the agreement was to sell the property and distribute the proceeds. I will be obtaining another property down the road in the near future. And I will definitely get back on the leghorn train. Hopefully by that time, Moony can start shipping eggs🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
