The most humane way

I use the "pull it off method" and it seems to work very quickly. The trick is to not be squeemish and pull hard and quick. Have a bucket handy to put the birds in as they will flail some before going limp.
If you search Youtube there are several methods demonstrated very well.
Good luck.

Every time this comes up it reminds of the day I threw a rock at a pesky squirrel harassing my birds. Just a freak shot the rock hit something on the ground and ricochet and struck one of my BR on the back of the head, the bird dropped completely out. I felt bad I thought I had killed it, a few seconds passed and it got up and ran around ticked off but was back to normal. I could never possibly pull that off again.

Wait...you actually take aim at the bird?

Well yeah, usually from a few feet behind the bird while it is scratching and eating. This way the bird is not stressed in the least, it is the most comfortable way for me. But not a good method for everybody, I can do it safely and I only do 1 or 2 birds at a time. It would be way to time consuming for a lot of birds. To be honest I would prefer using a pellet rifle as not to stress the other birds with the noise, but mine does not have enough umpf to kill instantly.
