Howdy y’all!
In case y’all haven’t known this, getting goats has been on my radar for the past year. I’ve been obediently doing my reaserch and learning about them the best that I can. But yesterday, we called spoke to the local sheriff and learned that the keeping of goats in not permitted on our one acre. Oh my goodness! And we also learned that my roosters have to go. The thing that really makes me fume, is what we CAN have. The sherif told us that pot-belly pigs are allowed on ANY size, residential lot! Oh my goodness gracious! And we cannot keep 2 Nigerian Dwarf goats that are about 60-70 pounds and are a tiny breed of goat! Do any of y’all have an idea why pot-belly pigs are allowed and not a tiny breed of goat? Thanks for reading this!

What previous person said. Pigs can be pets while goats might be considered livestock. Most people don’t keep goats in their house. Have to check local laws and ordinances before jumping in. They are different in each area. The best way is to check with local planning commission before buying, owning, or building structures to house animals till you know the local laws and ordinances. You can contact the planning commission to hear on why you would want to change an ordinance, they would direct you ( need neighborhood support and signed petitions with evidence to support) but to be honest with you it is easier to move to an area that offers you what you want. If can’t move then have to comply. Sorry!

Ok. Thanks!

It depends on the locality. In a lot of places both mini goats and potbelly pigs are considered pets and are allowed on residential lots. In others, both are considered livestock and are not. As for what the sheriff said, ask for the ordinance numbers and look the law up yourself. I have learned that what an official (any official) says the law is and what the law actually is are very often not the same thing or even close. Just about every community has a law library and you are free to use it. I have found that the reference librarians are very helpful.

Thank you! Maybe we will call again and specify that we are interested in mini goats..

We actually didn’t even talk to the sheriff, it was just the secretary. I bet that there is even a bigger chance that what you said did happen!
