Mind if I join? I'll be setting eggs on Sunday.

I lost one of my favorite hens yesterday, but I have several of her eggs still...they have been in the fridge however.I've seen threads where people hatch chicks from Trader Joes and such, and I figure at most, the oldest egg is five days old. While I'm not expecting a great hatch rate (I just hope I get at least one pullet out of this, maybe one that looks sorta like her late mom) I figure it's worth a shot.

I set 4 duck eggs I'd had in the fridge for over 2 weeks, and all hatched so I'm sure yours have a good chance.

I want to try ! I am tired now and will have to re read all the rules but I will set some Eggs tomorrow as the Mother of seven If I have a good Hatching I will call it my Mothers day present to myself !

OK guys, I'm having a hard time getting enthused for setting my eggs. . . My last hatch was so abysmal, with the shipped eggs. The local eggs I threw in just for fun for a friend ALL hatched just fine. Having every single box of eggs spend the day traveling our local roads on the mail truck makes me ill. Every box was clearly marked to hold for pick up. Last hatch, I hatched dry for the first time but, without adding water my r/h stayed at 30-35%. I was fine with that. Temps were stable as usual (confirmed by excessive amounts of thermometers). Maybe I'll do as karimw and rebel and only have them on end until the air cell heals and then hatch them on their side. That means I'll have to hand turn tho. . .

Decisions, decisions. . . Any thoughts, comments? I really need to motivate. Somebody

So I just found out that my old Farm Master Incubator has an alarm on it, it goes off with it starts to get a degree or so too high. YEAH

no more fried eggs.

Ummm.....what about those of us who have continuing staggered hatchings and the pics of our bators show WAYYYYYY more eggs than were actually set for this hatch?? Still want those pics?? lol

I just got some eggs and stuck them in the incubator. I had no idea they would hatch mother's day weekend.LOL, talk about planning. I don't know what this hatch-a- long thing is but I guess I'll learn. This is only my second hatch so help me along. I'm hatching Barred Rocks again. I have 44 in an incubator that only holds 42 - hand turning 2 eggs until there is room for them.

On my last hatch I got 30 chicks out of the 41 I put in. The hen/rooster ratio isn't that great but this is just for fun.

I set my 10 eggs (buff orp/speckled sussex) out of the 50 degree refrigerator last night before I went to bed and slipped them under my broody hen this morning. She's still sitting great 4 hours later!
I have only 6 chickens and they roam the yard and garden at will. My broody hen is in her favorite box- not penned in at all. This is my first attempt and maybe everything will go wrong, but I want to try it this way first.
If I get even 2 chicks- that will be beyond my expectations, but secretly I'm pretty excited and hopeful!

You didn't say what breed your broody is?? the Broody thread lists many of the better boodies. My BA and BO did a great job their first time, staying til the bitter end. Some people have a an incubator as back up.

Welcome--some people are new to hatching; some a little experience and others are experienced hatchers. All willing to help each other and share info and provide encouragement!!
