The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I need a little refresher, from all the other FF people. I would ask on the FF thread, but it's not exactly friendly over there right now for opinions.
I read the FF series, but don't recall seeing the answer...fermenting the feed doesn't raise the protein, it just makes more of it available to the chicken. Yes? I was pretty sure this was something we all talked about way back, but I'm just rechecking.
Correct it makes protien and other nutrients more bio-available.

So I asked a question yesterday with the necropsy photos but it may have been overlooked. Elphaba's body cavity was completely filled with a clear yellow liquid. The research I did points to Leukosis, but I found no tumors on her organs. Is there anything else that would cause the yellow liquid?

Egg Yolk Peritonitis can cause the body cavity to fill with clear/yellow fluid like that...
Mumsy posted this link a while back that has excellent pics of a really advanced case of EYP. Lots of fluid in the body cavity is shown here in this pic.

In a couple of months I'll have some chick pics, til then I've got my scruffy looking girls. oh well!

That's the chicken end of the trailer coop - you can barely see the hawk enclosure - fencing for a roof and snow fence for the sides . In the spring and summer they have access to the whole 4,000 sf run, but in the fall the owls/hawks feed on them. In the winter with the snow, they mostly stay under the coop or in a shoveled area.

Here's the other end of the trailer, my project this spring is to demo out the front half of the trailer and uncover the windows to make a coop area for the chicks that are coming this summer.

Love how you've repurposed this and such a deal!

Darth 'Bator hatched out all 5 SFH eggs! She's a good mamma, yet still lets me handle her and her babies.

Too Adorable! Must keep repeating to myself.."No more chicks, No more chicks.....for now!"

The first chicken swap of the Spring is this Sat. I already feel it calling to me.

Growing so fast every day until they can move into their mansion lol.

There is no replacement for good helpers by my side through every step of this build...even if they are furry. Okay true they have problems hammering, but hey we all have issues.

Such cute chicks! What is the first little cutie? I have 3 helpers too but on a much smaller scale (Poms)....can't even find hammers they can use! I've delegated digging holes to them. They're good diggers!

Okay that is one I missed ...a cherry egger? I'll have to look that one up, it sounds interesting.

Thanks for the welcome :) The two little Ameraucanas are my start, I have 8 (different types except for the two white silkies) coming in Mothers Day week.

Yes it makes more of the nutrients available. (its calmed down some over on the FF forum lol)

And if you find the link that would be great. I brought my old gardening book with me to leaf through at work to see if I could find a chart of what to plan when. Mother Earth has a chart but its only monthly and cumbersome to look at.

Hey CoopChick :) According to Boss Brothers Feed they are both supposed to be Ameraucanas (guess we will see what pops out). The Brown one (named from where she was bought) is Bossy, the other Flossie. I am impressed that your helpers helped you dig. I tried that with mine while digging the trench around my coop (coyotes killing goats and flocks around here). They got down there with me nose to snout...dropped their ball in and dug to get it out, that was about all their attention span would allow. I was tempted to drop balls all around the perimeter to enlist them but just dug it myself. A good motivator for me was my big ole 6 10 hubby saying he knew I could not do this by myself....then I did girl power (okay me and my furry helpers did)
