The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I just want to add something I found tonight. I was able to use a recycled large plastic veggie tray (circle in the middle and compartments around with a lid) from the grocery for the first aid stuff I needed tonight. And it was totally portable! The round spot in the center was perfect for dunking a duck foot in Epsom Salts, the gauze in another, the Neosprin in another. I can see how it would be very advantageous to stock a kit in this type of container, with a lid, to keep on hand for emergencies.

I have a question about my rooster and oyster shell.
Is there a reason one of my roos is eating the oyster shell like it was a treat? He started eating more and more of it about a week a go. I had been leaving about 2 cups of the shell crumbles in a small container in the coop. It would last for a month or so, but last week I was filling it up every 2 - 3 days and it was the same roo running to get it each time I refilled the container.

I have thought about separating the roo from the hens during the day and taking away the oyster shell at night so he would not eat all of it. Then I got thinking maybe there is a reason he is eating the oyster shell.
It i so unusual I would be watching him myself. He might be lacking something and trying to get it through the shells. Do you have grit? Try tossing in a few fresh herbs and greens like spinach.

Great idea Holly..thanks for the suggestion..and hello!

I officially have 6 layers now! Found an egg under the roost this morning and all the other girls had laid. So now I have 4 New Hampshires and 2 Cuckoo Marans laying. Now I have the long wait for the 8 week olds to start! One of them is a boy for sure, I'm hoping it's only the one of the 4.

I just opened the shed that the hens live in, flipped out the folding ramp so I could get in, and accidentally

I can't even describe how aweful I feel.
I'm very sorry.. for your loss.
