The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I just opened the shed that the hens live in, flipped out the folding ramp so I could get in, and accidentally killed my little splash ameracauna hen Gigi. I didn't even see her. I was too busy dealing with the rooster who was posturing, and distracted. I'm taking of the ramp first thing tomorrow morning. That won't bring her back. She was a hundred pounds of personality in a tiny little body.

I can't even describe how aweful I feel.
So sorry about your little hen. Things like that have happened to all of us.

I'm so sorry to hear that :(

A friend of mine did the exact same thing with a silkie. It happens. Don't beat yourself up.

I don't think there is a link for a list of supplies lol Everyone has their own favorites or tried & true products. But I am guessing most people would share their list? Then maybe someone could put it at that place for easier access?

. (I didn't see a list there last time I looked)

Here is what I have. I compiled my list from OT's with a lot of knowledge and wanted the least amount of chemicals.

Bag balm, Nustock, blue kote, Epsom salts, witch hazel, vet wrap, EMS scissors, tweezers, plastic gloves, baby wipes, hemmoroid cream, drawing salve, antibiotic cream & zip ties.

The most important thing is a plastic box to keep them all togetherness your not running around looking for everything lol
great list..don't forget sanitizer.
I tried the food color thing last night.....thought I got it in the right opening...vent. Well, I guess not. Got 2 eggs today, not one color on them. So, I guess I need more information. Oh, I probably have rainbow colored poops out in the run though...

lol..never fear..if you injected dye it will color the eggs. It will be streaked probably tomorrow

Tomorrow I put my eggs in lockdown. I'm excited and hope I get a few chicks! The eggs are so dark I can't see anything going on.
Good luck!! keep us posted
all we get is a dot?

I have a question about my rooster and oyster shell.
Is there a reason one of my roos is eating the oyster shell like it was a treat? He started eating more and more of it about a week a go. I had been leaving about 2 cups of the shell crumbles in a small container in the coop. It would last for a month or so, but last week I was filling it up every 2 - 3 days and it was the same roo running to get it each time I refilled the container.

I have thought about separating the roo from the hens during the day and taking away the oyster shell at night so he would not eat all of it. Then I got thinking maybe there is a reason he is eating the oyster shell.

Forgot I also have blue kote, "surgical gloves" and a bunch misc. things that keep coming to mind in my kit. I do think BDM will compile everyone's lists into a permanent post that we can find easily...they're on SPRING BREAK VACATION this week!
