The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

He even uses his chainsaw to cut his own firewood in his backyard! All in all, though, I wish I could move! I want more land, space between neighbors. I think I could happily live in the middle of nowhere. I am only on a 1/2 acre so the houses are close.
Ya know, if you build a dog boarding kennel beside his fenceline, he'll stop complaining about the crowing and you can earn money for a new property. Win/win!

Oh, I meant to say, you have to be a good neighbor to have a good neighbor. (Just kiddin') We have neighbor wars all over. Mine are just crazy sometimes. (Did I mention he's a doomsday prepper?) I'm always telling him that he may have the guns and ammo but I'll have the food.

He's complained about our dogs before too... He has one dog but he takes it in at night, whereas ours are used to guard the birds and yard so they are out all year, so yes, they are going to bark on occasion.

He might be planning on using his gun to take over your chickens in the event of a food shortage.
I could never be a doomsday planner, too much other stuff to spend money on.

Hi everyone,

I am way behind, I feel like a lurker. I think I almost caught up last night, but I wanted to pop on and ask a few questions about chicks. Above are my 4 1/2 week old BR and GLW. Do they look feathered out enough to be left outside in their own coop and run? The next few days will be warm with the nights in the 50's, but Saturday night it might get into the upper 30's. it is just getting to be too much moving them back and forth everyday, but if I have to I will. Also, I read about chest bumping in the little chicks. Mine do it to each other, but not to us. Does that mean some might be cockerals or will the pullets do ?

I appreciate the information about training the cockerals. Might came at me today and my daughter last week. .Both times we had something in our hands and it seems that he was coming after that. I kicked him in the chest pretty hard and he kept coming at me until I threw the container at him. Then he was like, oh, hey. I will try the advice on here only because when I mention about making him "winner, winner, chicken dinner" my daughter gets teary eyed. I have warned her though to be very careful around him.

In better news, I think, my second pullet is finally laying! About 10 months old, I was begining to think she was a he that didn't crow.

Has anyone had any experience using a broody AG hen to hatch? Only 1 W chick hatched & I'd like to pu 1 or 2 more chicks to go with it but I'm afraid a Game hen wouldn't tolerate a stranger :(

So are you saying you like the meat better on the hair sheep?

I'm looking at boer goats and hair sheep for meat. I just heard of hair sheep this year so I know very little. Someone told me that they would "browse" like a goat rather than just needing grass pasture so I have been trying to get as much info on them as possible! Anything you can tell me would be great. (You could pm...) I don't know about Painted Desert - just heard of the Katahdan.

I'm eager to hear the answer about leaving the chicks in the coop. We have 19 chicks and have been letting them play in the new coop during the day and back to the heat lamp in the evenings.
