The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This isn't chicken related but I have to say this ................................. Appearantly it is a good thing I am married since I can not seem to tell boys from girls of the human kind. This week at work I have ran into 3 people that I still have no clue as to thier gender, the only comforting thing is that my partner (work not life) was also at a loss.
That sounds normal for today's world.

The only thing that concerned me with the gizzard pic is the apparent lack of grit. Was there any in there. And that is a lot of fat, but I don't think she was laying internally, that usually has a body cavity filled with clear yellow liquid. My pullet I put down a couple weeks ago was laying shell less inside and was bloated with the yellow liquid. But good job on doing your first necro. You will learn more each time you do it.

OK, one last chick ? for the day...

Their getting rather raggedy looking with bits of dried feed (again, fermented) & I'm guessing poop on their wings & such (no pastey butt). Never had chicks before, is this normal or do I need to clean them. It really wouldn't bother me except family is coming on Sunday to see them. Just don't want them thinking I'm a bad chicken keeper, ha! I plan on giving them a little dish of sand & ash to play in tomorrow. Will they dust bath this early & will that help clean them up?

Day 1 with my 1st flock has gone well! It was a beautiful day here in Kansas & I surprised myself by actually getting quite a lot done, especially outside. When they 1st arrived this morning I thought to myself, well this days shot - figured I'd be spending the rest of the day watching over them...

Thanks so much to those who helped me out with my questions earlier this morning!

Kendra ;)

I havent had that issue with my chicks but Im using one of those feeders with the holes so they cant walk in it. With that I havent had any poop issues either but for the first three days I had them on newspaper and now their on kiln dried pine shavings.

Hey all, I don't mean to intrude, but I've got a question, and can't find any info on it. Its about natural chicken keeping! Would someone be able to help?

Not if you don't state the question!!! LOL Ask probably someone will know the answer or where or to whom to refer the question.

"no question is dumb. Cocci is every where. Mothers get her chicks out of the nest and on the ground at day three to help her chicks start immunities. As long as they are not confined the chances of getting over load of cocci is slim. Chicks and adult birds contract cocci when confined to areas that do not have a chance to air out or the sun to hit it to keep it down to lower levels..or..even the super clean get it because they are not given a chance to build immunities. Than when they are exposed to it ..wham. it hits like a ton of bricks.
It is never to late..dig out a small plug in the area you intend them to graze. It is never to late..."

I was just wondering.....if you sprayed the area with LAB, would that prevent cocci as it is suppose to kill pathogens and rebuild the soil? I'd like to try this in my run and pasture area.

Lol I know. I have posted in large threads like this before and been ignored. I just wanted someones attention first. :D

I HATE the idea of using chemicals on my birds, but would like to worm them. I have looked and looked, but everything on natural worming is so controversial. I have heard of the cayenne pepper and black walnut shells. So, to the point, has anyone heard of/used a natural substance that will effectively worm my birds?
