The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I put up an old metal roof sheet from the old (destroyed) coop that was on this property as a wind break. It works quite nicely... but of course my gang is all outside in the whipping winds.

No - he's not a frizzle. LOL.

Swedish Flower gang... they seem oblivious to the wind and cold.
Just after I took this shot, my daughter's bantam cochin pullet blew by... literally. She made it into the safety of the coop, but kept trying to venture back out to be with the other chickens.

Okay...how do you accomplish THAT? "They are NEVER allowed to go broody again."
Does that mean they become dinner?

Yep...high winds here and a bit of snow on the ground...they won't go out. I did entice 2 of them out by throwing some spelt out there but they didn't stay long! I think they'll come on out after the winds die down.
all of my chickens went out, then most hid under tree's. The Sumatra's are braver and head out in all but the heaviest down pours. But they don't seem to like it.

No, my hens don't become dinner unless something kills them and I don't kill the hens unless they are sick. I find old hens an important part of the flock. They lived that long by becoming very savy. The young one learn a lot from them. What I mean by "never allowed again" is if they EVEN think about it I break them of it.

holly doo doo that is one silly looking chicken
That's Harriet. Yep. She's a funky chicken. Thinks she's a silkie. Even plays stupid like them

Though she roosts, so she's a little smarter. She has a lot of character. Makes me laugh constantly. If you've ever heard a polish chicken talk - you'll know why.
Aoxa - I think that upside-down head scratching picture left more than a few of us scratching our heads...

LOL!

Anyone else feeling itchy now??

Sad day in our house on this day, for us, it truly is the longest night. 24 years ago I lost my first cousin Joyce DiMauro in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. We grew up together in the Bronx, and she was more of a sister than a cousin. I will never forget her infectious laugh, and her smile, and the way she made me feel. Till we meet again sweet Joyce.

Sorry for the personal side note. Couldn't say another word without remembering her.

Please say a prayer for everyone who was taken too soon, and those missing from our lives.
Blessings to all,
Carmela

Prayers to you and your family, sorry for your loss.
