The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Everyone on this thread is so wonderful and supportive, I really like that.

Well, my third egg didn't have a living chick in it. :( Guess I will have to find a way to make use of these roosters before they go into the freezer. I am thinking they will throw a blue gene, so I could get a green egg from one of their babies.

Okay, then...what's the best way to accomplish that? I keep hearing all the normal stuff, but lots of folks say it doesn't work for them. What's your secret?

. For most of my girls removing their eggs is enough. Sometimes it also takes repeatedly removing them from the nest also. Actually I've never had to do more than those 2 steps. Though it often takes several removals from the nest to break them.

Same here I have had some hens that love to brood but were not good mamas, so when I would see them sitting I just take the egg out from under them, and just keep doing it till they get the message. and Leahs Mom, if you have some light colored egg under your girl you should candle at least once, it is just the coolest thing to see those lil ones inside the egg.

Maybe I'll take a look tonight. The Swedish eggs are relatively light as far as brown eggs go. Do you usually do it at night? I know Aoxa said to catch them when they're off the nest but I'm thinking the dark would make it easier to see?

I just borrow and egg go into a dark room which is where i keep my feed, and take a look then replace it and borrow another, my hen doesn't mind at all. you just need to see it now and then right before hatch day. Never have candled at night but that would be a good idea.
