The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

For those of you that have turkeys in with your chickens. Do you ever have problems with them getting along? I was just out there and Rosie, the tyrant, was trying to stomp 4 - 5 hens that were nestled down in the dust bowl. With 2 coops, the 5 hens that think they are better than the rest and movin' on up with the others and Rosie and Chuck are goin' down slumin'. The wind is blowing, snow is swirling but my water didn't freeze in the dog bowls.

My turkey hens are my biggest problem. My tom is great with the chickens. My turkey hens chase the roosters around like crazy. They seem to only like the silkies. They used to fly over the fence and hang with them all day in the pen I had. The silkies were the only ones who didn't pick on them when they were young.

I am a total newbie, so can't advise as to the football egg but are you just so excited that you are filling an egg carton? I will be over the moon if that is me. Of course, I have myself convinced that my 9 girls will never lay due to some rare conditon, I'll have chickless, eggless pets......

I've seen some pretty strange looking eggs to in my 3and half years of keeping chickens, never seen a weird duck egg though, but maybe they get rid of them before I look for them.

I got my first fart egg yesterday! It was from a bantam, so it was the size of a thumbnail. Crazy cute!! I broke it open and it was mostly yolk.

Ok guys, I've had two first eggs so far, and they were perfect eggs. Wonderful shape and shell. I got an odd one today, and I'm assuming it's a third girls first egg, but of course need some expert opinions.


These are my sex-links eggs, perfect from the start. Obviously, that wrinkled football in the front is the egg in question. Not only is it oddly shaped But I can feel how brittle the shell is when I tap it with my nail. It's a first egg right?

It is very exciting. My sex-links are consistent egg a day layers. I'm putting together this dozen for my MIL, she'll be just as excited as we were to try them.
I'm not sure who laid that odd egg, either one of the Wyandottes, or my BR. What color do Wyandottes lay? Hoping whoever laid this football egg figures out that that shape is incorrect, it's not quite fitting in the egg carton.

Bet it's your wyandotte who laid it. My wayandottes were very odd in the egg department. And the eggs were a very light brown.

And their regular egg isn't much bigger.

I do like to steam them and eat them for a snack. the regular ones not the fart eggs.

I have a basket with 4 or 5 dried out fart eggs in it, I think they are cool. Never thought of it but the only thing wrong I've ever seen with a duck egg is how dirty they can make them.......

Wow I get swamped at work for a week and ..... Glad I found the new thread as I enjoy the sage advice from all of the posters and AOXA's photographs!!!

So BDM big props for keeping it going!!!

I haven't even started reading this thread yet so I'm already 138 pages behind as I'm SWAMPED with work.... yes I'm here now .... so can everyone please take a break for a few days so that I might be able to catch up

Okay who am I kidding I have NO TIME for the next few weeks so I just have to accept that I will be WAY behind!!! When I clicked over here I did see Leah's Mom's Coop picture and wow that is pretty!!! How big is it??? I'd love to see more pictures of your setup!
